Ferrari has unveiled the new 296 GT Modificata, a track only supercar developed for customers seeking a circuit focused driving experience. The new model is derived from Ferrari's racing technology and is positioned as an unrestricted evolution of the 296 GT platform. Unlike the road legal 296 GTB and the competition focused 296 GT3 Evo, the 296 GT Modificata is intended exclusively for track day use. Ferrari lists a power output of 730 cv and a dry weight of 1,330 kg for the model.
The Ferrari 296 GT Modificata is based heavily on the engineering experience gained from the 296 GT3 Evo race car. However, Ferrari engineers were able to develop the new model without having to follow the technical restrictions imposed by a specific racing championship. This allowed the company to make changes to the engine, aerodynamics, cooling systems and other components with a focus on track performance.
At the centre of the car is a 2,992 cc twin turbocharged V6 engine. Ferrari has revised several engine components, including the connecting rods and camshafts, while also making changes to the air intake system, intercoolers, turbochargers and exhaust system. The engine produces 730 hp at 7,500 rpm and 800 Nm of torque. Recent automotive reports note that the output is significantly higher than the power available from the regulation restricted 296 GT3 Evo.
Unlike the road going 296 GTB, the 296 GT Modificata does not use the plug in hybrid system associated with the road car. The track model instead focuses on its twin turbo V6 powertrain and a lightweight construction approach. Ferrari has also revised the engine and transmission systems to suit the requirements of circuit driving.
The 1,330 kg dry weight is another important aspect of the car. A lower weight helps reduce the load on the brakes, tyres and suspension while also supporting acceleration, cornering and braking performance. The final operating weight will be higher because the dry weight figure does not include certain fluids and other running requirements.
Ferrari has also developed a dedicated aerodynamic package for the 296 GT Modificata. At the front, the car receives a redesigned splitter and bonnet with larger openings to improve airflow and cooling. The rear features a new wing mounted on a central support. Its design includes elements inspired by Ferrari's 499P endurance racing car.
The revised aerodynamic components are intended to generate additional downforce and improve stability at high speeds. Ferrari has also worked on the cooling system because the higher performance specification places additional demands on the engine and other mechanical components.
The braking system has received corresponding upgrades. Ferrari has introduced revised front brake components and additional cooling provisions to help manage temperatures during repeated hard braking on a circuit. These changes are particularly relevant for a car intended for extended track sessions rather than normal road driving.
The cabin has also been designed around track use. The 296 GT Modificata is a two seat model, allowing space for a passenger or driving instructor. Ferrari has incorporated data acquisition and video recording technology to help drivers analyse their track sessions and improve their driving performance. Additional systems monitor areas such as tyre pressure and temperature.
Ferrari says the 296 GT Modificata can complete a lap of its Fiorano test circuit approximately three seconds faster than the 296 GT3 Evo. This is a manufacturer claim based on Ferrari's testing and should not be interpreted as an independently verified production car lap record.
The new model also forms part of Ferrari's Club Competizioni GT customer programme. Buyers receive two years of access, or 12 rounds, to the programme. These events are designed to give customers opportunities to drive eligible Ferrari GT racing cars on international circuits in a non competitive environment.
The 296 GT Modificata follows the approach established by the Ferrari 488 GT Modificata, which was introduced as a track focused model for customers. The new car takes the same concept forward using technology developed from Ferrari's latest GT racing programme.
Ferrari has not positioned the 296 GT Modificata as a conventional road car. Its purpose is to provide customers with a dedicated track machine that combines racing derived technology with systems designed for private circuit use. This also means that its equipment and specifications should not be directly compared with those of the road legal 296 GTB.
Pricing and production numbers have not been highlighted in Ferrari's official specification information. The model is being offered through the company's customer racing programme, making it different from Ferrari's regular series production road cars. Availability will therefore depend on Ferrari's customer allocation process and programme requirements.
The Ferrari 296 GT Modificata represents another example of the company's approach to developing specialised track cars outside conventional racing regulations. With 730 cv, a 1,330 kg dry weight, revised aerodynamics and technology derived from the 296 GT3 Evo, the model has been engineered specifically around circuit driving.
For Indian enthusiasts, the car should not be viewed as a new road car expected to receive a conventional India launch. Ferrari describes the 296 GT Modificata as intended solely for track day use. Its availability is therefore linked to the company's international customer programme rather than the regular road car market.
