FADA President Sai Giridhar indicated that demand for electric vehicles was strong, with vehicle availability emerging as an important factor for the market.

India’s automobile retail market recorded 31,72,466 vehicle sales in October 2026, registering a 25.05 per cent increase compared with September. The latest figures were released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Despite a decline compared with the same month last year, October recorded the second-highest vehicle retail sales for the month.

The increase over September indicates stronger retail activity ahead of the festive season. However, the year-on-year comparison presents a different picture. Total vehicle retail sales declined 23.80 per cent compared with October 2025, when the market experienced unusually strong demand.

FADA attributed much of this annual decline to differences in the festive calendar. In 2025, Navratri and Diwali both fell in October, while in 2026, Navratri was celebrated in October and Dhanteras and Diwali moved to November. As a result, a significant portion of festive vehicle purchases is expected to be reflected in November's sales figures.

Why Did Vehicle Sales Rise Month on Month?

The 25.05 per cent month-on-month increase reflects the improvement in vehicle registrations compared with September. Total retail sales increased from 25,36,920 units in September to 31,72,466 units in October.

The festive season is an important period for the Indian automobile industry. Many customers prefer purchasing cars, motorcycles and scooters during festivals because of promotional offers, discounts and auspicious buying dates.

However, the timing of festivals can significantly influence monthly registration figures. Since Dhanteras and Diwali fall in November this year, some customers may have postponed their purchases from October.

FADA President Sai Giridhar said that October's performance should be assessed in the context of the festive calendar and the unusually high comparison base from the previous year. The association considers the month-on-month increase a better indicator of the underlying festive demand than the year-on-year decline alone.

Two-Wheeler and Passenger Vehicle Sales

Two-wheelers continued to account for the largest share of India's vehicle retail market in October. The segment recorded 23,21,419 units, representing a 28.35 per cent decline compared with October 2025. However, two-wheeler registrations increased 29.67 per cent over September.

The decline was more pronounced in rural markets. Rural two-wheeler retail sales fell 33.97 per cent year on year, while urban registrations declined 20.77 per cent. The figures indicate that rural demand remains an important factor influencing the performance of this segment.

Passenger vehicle retail sales stood at 5,07,768 units in October. This represented a 14.23 per cent year-on-year decline, although registrations increased 18.86 per cent compared with September. The segment recorded its third-best October performance.

Passenger vehicle inventory remains an important concern for dealers. FADA reported that dealer stock levels were around 43 to 45 days, broadly unchanged from September. Dealers will be watching festive demand closely to determine whether inventories can be reduced in the coming months.

Commercial Vehicles, Three-Wheelers and Tractors Record Growth

While two-wheelers and passenger vehicles recorded annual declines, several other vehicle categories reported growth in October.

Commercial vehicle retail sales increased 2.29 per cent year on year to 1,15,140 units. The segment also recorded its highest-ever October performance.

Three-wheeler retail sales rose 3.97 per cent to 1,41,420 units, marking another record October for the category. Tractors recorded 79,285 units, registering 3.10 per cent annual growth and their best-ever October performance.

Wheeled construction equipment retail sales also showed strong growth. The category recorded 7,434 units, an increase of 22.07 per cent compared with the corresponding month last year.

These figures indicate that the performance of India's automobile market was mixed in October. Some categories experienced pressure from the high comparison base, while commercial vehicles, three-wheelers, tractors and construction equipment continued to register annual growth.

Electric Vehicle Sales Reach an All-Time High

Electric vehicles emerged as one of the strongest-performing segments in October 2026. According to FADA data, EV retail sales reached approximately 3.55 lakh units, marking an all-time high.

Electric vehicle sales increased by around 45 per cent compared with October 2025. EV penetration also rose to approximately 11.5 per cent of total vehicle retail sales, compared with around 6 per cent in the same month last year.

The growth reflects increasing interest in electric mobility across different vehicle categories. Electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles contributed to the overall performance.

FADA President Sai Giridhar indicated that demand for electric vehicles was strong, with vehicle availability emerging as an important factor for the market. Improvements in driving range and greater price competitiveness have also contributed to customer interest.

The record EV figures highlight the growing role of electric mobility in India's automobile industry. However, future growth will also depend on vehicle availability, charging infrastructure, pricing and consumer confidence.

FADA Expects November Sales to Benefit From Dhanteras and Diwali

FADA expects November to be an important month for automobile dealers because Dhanteras and Diwali both fall within the month in 2026.

Dhanteras is being observed on November 6, while Diwali falls on November 8. These festivals traditionally encourage customers to make major purchases, including cars, motorcycles and other vehicles.

According to FADA's dealer survey, 51.65 per cent of respondents expect vehicle retail sales to increase during November. Another 34.71 per cent expect sales to remain broadly unchanged, while 13.64 per cent anticipate a decline.

The survey indicates cautious optimism among automobile dealers. The festive period could bring additional showroom visits and vehicle registrations, particularly in segments where purchases were postponed from October.

However, the final performance will depend on customer demand, vehicle availability, financing conditions and the discounts offered by manufacturers and dealers.

Challenges Facing the Automobile Market

Despite the positive month-on-month performance and record EV sales, the automobile industry continues to face several challenges.

Passenger vehicle inventory levels remain relatively high, and dealers are monitoring whether festive purchases will help reduce unsold stock. Financing costs and loan repayments may also influence customers planning to purchase vehicles.

Rural demand is another important factor, particularly for two-wheelers. The sharp annual decline in rural registrations indicates that market conditions remain uneven across different regions and customer groups.

According to industry reports, dealers are also concerned about the possibility of weaker demand after the festive season. The performance of the market in December and January will depend on year-end offers, new vehicle launches, supply conditions and the strength of consumer demand.

What to Expect From India's Auto Market

October's retail figures show that India's automobile market continues to experience changes influenced by festival timings, customer preferences and the growing adoption of electric vehicles.

The 25.05 per cent month-on-month increase and the second-best October performance indicate that vehicle retail activity remained strong compared with September. At the same time, the 23.80 per cent annual decline highlights the impact of the unusually high base recorded in October 2025.

The record electric vehicle sales provide another positive development for the industry. Meanwhile, dealers are looking towards November's festive buying period for further growth.

The coming months will show whether the expected festive demand translates into sustained retail growth. Vehicle availability, financing costs, rural purchasing power and inventory management will remain important factors for the industry.
