Volvo Cars has revealed updated plug in hybrid versions of its XC60 and XC90 SUVs for international markets, bringing a substantially larger battery and increased electric driving range to both models. The updated versions were announced on September 15, 2026, as Volvo expands its electrified vehicle range while continuing its transition towards fully electric vehicles.
The most significant change is the introduction of a 41.2 kWh battery pack for the plug in hybrid variants. According to Volvo, the larger floor integrated battery and a more powerful electric motor allow the vehicles to travel significantly farther using electric power alone. The company says the new XC60 can achieve up to 200 km of electric range under WLTP testing conditions, while the XC90 can achieve up to 160 km. Actual driving range can vary depending on factors such as temperature, driving style, vehicle specification, road conditions and speed.
The updated powertrain continues to combine an internal combustion engine with an electric motor. This allows the SUVs to operate using electric power for suitable journeys while retaining the petrol engine for longer trips. Volvo is positioning the technology as an intermediate step towards wider electrification, giving customers the option of electric driving for daily use without relying entirely on battery power for longer-distance travel.
The XC60 receives more extensive design changes as part of the update. Volvo has redesigned several exterior elements, including the grille, front bumper, bonnet, front wings and wheels. The SUV also receives revised Thor's Hammer Matrix LED lighting and updated rear lighting elements. These changes give the XC60 a refreshed appearance while retaining the overall design language associated with the model.
Inside the XC60, Volvo has introduced an updated dashboard design and an 11.2 inch infotainment display running the company's latest Car UX software. The updated vehicle also receives new technology and driver assistance features. Volvo says its safety system uses upgraded cameras, radar and other sensors to help detect potential hazards.
The XC60 can also be equipped with features such as automatic emergency steering, automatic emergency braking, lane change assistance and a 360 degree camera with a 3D view. The vehicle also introduces Google Gemini integration, allowing drivers to interact with the infotainment system using natural language for functions such as journey planning and other connected services. The XC90 receives the same major plug in hybrid powertrain upgrade with the 41.2 kWh battery. Volvo describes the XC90 as a large premium family SUV and continues to offer it as a seven seater. The model receives the company's updated Car UX software and Google Gemini integration, while its exterior and interior design remain broadly similar to the recently updated version.
Automotive reports indicate that the updated XC60 PHEV produces up to 461 hp and 759 Nm, while the XC90 PHEV develops up to 461 hp and 751 Nm. The XC60 has a claimed 0 to 100 kmph acceleration time of 4.8 seconds, while the XC90 takes a claimed 5.2 seconds. These figures apply to the international specification and should not be assumed to represent any future India specification.
Volvo has announced the new long range plug in hybrid variants for European and American markets. The company says production will begin later in autumn 2026, with customer deliveries expected to start in early 2027. The vehicles will also continue to receive over the air software updates as part of Volvo's connected vehicle strategy.
For the Indian market, Volvo currently sells the XC60 and XC90 with mild hybrid powertrains rather than the plug in hybrid versions described in the latest global announcement. Autocar India reported that the PHEV versions are not currently offered in India. Therefore, an India launch for these new long range PHEV variants should not be considered confirmed unless Volvo Cars India makes a separate announcement.
