India's automobile retail market recorded 31,72,466 vehicle sales in October 2026, registering a 25.05 per cent increase compared with September. The figures were released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), which tracks vehicle registrations across the country.
Despite the strong month-on-month improvement, October's total retail sales were 23.80 per cent lower than the corresponding month in 2025. FADA said the year-on-year comparison needs to be viewed in the context of the festive calendar and the unusually high sales base recorded last year.
October 2025 benefited from both Navratri and Diwali falling in the same month, along with additional buying activity following the GST 2.0 rate reductions announced in September 2025. In 2026, Navratri took place in October, while Dhanteras and Diwali shifted to November.
As a result, a significant portion of festive vehicle purchases is expected to be reflected in November's retail figures. FADA described October 2026 as the second-highest October on record, despite the annual decline.
Why Vehicle Sales Increased Compared With September
The 25.05 per cent month-on-month growth indicates that vehicle registrations improved significantly over September 2026. Total retail sales increased from 25,36,920 units in September to 31,72,466 units in October.
The increase was supported by stronger registrations across several vehicle categories. Two-wheelers recorded the largest volume, while passenger vehicles also registered a notable improvement compared with the previous month.
The timing of festive purchases is an important factor in understanding the figures. October traditionally attracts strong vehicle demand because many buyers prefer to purchase vehicles during the festive season. However, with Dhanteras and Diwali falling in November this year, some customers may have postponed their purchases.
Therefore, the monthly increase reflects improving retail activity, but the complete impact of the festive season will become clearer after November registration figures are released.
Two-Wheeler Sales Record the Highest Volume
Two-wheelers remained the largest category in India's automobile retail market during October 2026. The segment recorded 23,21,419 units, accounting for the majority of total vehicle registrations.
Two-wheeler retail sales increased 29.67 per cent compared with September. However, they declined 28.35 per cent compared with October 2025.
FADA attributed the annual decline partly to the high base recorded during the previous year's festive season. Rural two-wheeler registrations faced greater pressure, declining 33.97 per cent year-on-year, compared with a 20.77 per cent decline in urban markets.
The difference highlights the importance of rural demand for the two-wheeler industry. Seasonal income, agricultural activity, financing costs and the timing of festive purchases can influence buying decisions in these markets.
FADA expects November's festive demand to provide additional support to the segment, particularly as Dhanteras and Diwali fall within the month.
Passenger Vehicle Retail Sales Improve Month on Month
Passenger vehicle retail sales reached 5,07,768 units in October 2026. The segment recorded an 18.86 per cent increase compared with September but remained 14.23 per cent lower than October 2025.
Despite the annual decline, October was the third-best October on record for passenger vehicle retail sales, according to FADA.
The association also highlighted passenger vehicle inventory levels as an important concern for dealers. Stock levels remained around 43 to 45 days in October, broadly unchanged from September.
Higher inventory can increase the financial pressure on dealerships because vehicles remain unsold for longer periods. Dealers will be watching November demand closely to determine whether festive purchases can reduce available stock.
FADA expects the festive retail period to support vehicle deliveries and help bring inventory levels down. However, the final outcome will depend on customer demand, vehicle availability and the discounts offered by manufacturers and dealerships.
Commercial Vehicles, Three-Wheelers and Tractors Record Growth
Some vehicle categories recorded year-on-year growth despite the decline in overall retail sales.
Commercial vehicle retail sales reached 1,15,140 units, registering 2.29 per cent growth compared with October 2025. The segment also increased 11.19 per cent month on month.
Three-wheeler registrations stood at 1,41,420 units, marking a 3.97 per cent annual increase and a 6.68 per cent monthly improvement. FADA identified October 2026 as the best October on record for this category.
Tractor retail sales reached 79,285 units, growing 3.10 per cent year on year. The segment also recorded a 3.09 per cent increase compared with September.
Wheeled construction equipment registrations stood at 7,434 units, representing 22.07 per cent annual growth. The category also increased 14.62 per cent month on month.
These figures indicate that commercial vehicles, three-wheelers, tractors and construction equipment performed better than the two-wheeler and passenger vehicle segments in the annual comparison.
Electric Vehicle Retail Reaches a Record High
Electric vehicles were one of the strongest performers in October 2026. EV retail sales reached approximately 3.55 lakh units, marking an all-time high.
Electric vehicles accounted for around 11.5 per cent of total vehicle retail sales during the month, compared with approximately 6 per cent in October 2025.
The record performance indicates growing interest in electric mobility across multiple vehicle categories. Electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles all contributed to the increase.
FADA said customer interest in electric vehicles remained strong, with vehicle availability emerging as an important factor in meeting demand.
The expansion of electric vehicle options, improvements in driving range and increasing availability of charging infrastructure are among the factors influencing customer interest. However, the pace of future growth will also depend on vehicle prices, charging access, financing options and after-sales support.
The October performance highlights the growing contribution of electric vehicles to India's overall automobile retail market.
FADA Survey Shows Optimism for November Sales
FADA's dealer survey indicates that many dealers expect retail sales to improve in November 2026.
According to the survey, 51.65 per cent of dealers expect vehicle retail sales to increase during the month. Another 34.71 per cent anticipate sales remaining stable, while 13.64 per cent expect a decline.
The association linked the positive outlook to the timing of Dhanteras and Diwali. Both festivals fall in November this year, creating an opportunity for vehicle manufacturers and dealerships to attract customers.
Festive offers, discounts, exchange benefits and finance schemes could also influence purchasing decisions. However, the final sales performance will depend on customer confidence, affordability and the availability of preferred models and variants.
Dealers will also be monitoring the impact of higher financing costs and changing consumer demand during the post-festive period.
What Could Influence the Automobile Market After November?
The automobile industry's performance after the festive season will depend on several factors. Vehicle manufacturers and dealerships will be looking at year-end offers, new model launches and the availability of popular variants to maintain sales momentum.
Passenger vehicle inventory will remain an important issue for dealerships. If November demand helps reduce unsold stock, dealers may have greater flexibility in managing fresh vehicle dispatches.
Rural demand will also be closely monitored, particularly in the two-wheeler and tractor categories. Changes in agricultural income, financing costs and consumer spending could influence purchases in the coming months.
Electric vehicle sales are another important area to watch. The record registrations in October suggest that EV demand is becoming a significant part of India's automobile market. However, sustained growth will require improvements in product availability, charging infrastructure and customer support.
October Sales Reflect a Shift in Festive Demand
India's automobile retail market recorded 31.72 lakh vehicle registrations in October 2026, making it the second-highest October on record. The 25.05 per cent monthly increase reflects stronger activity compared with September, while the 23.80 per cent annual decline was influenced by the unusually high base and the shift in the festive calendar.
The record electric vehicle registrations provided another positive development for the industry. Commercial vehicles, three-wheelers and tractors also recorded annual growth.
FADA expects Dhanteras and Diwali purchases to support November sales, with more than half of surveyed dealers anticipating an increase in retail activity.
The November figures will provide a clearer picture of festive demand and indicate whether the automobile market can maintain its momentum towards the end of 2026.
