Anup Bagchi Takes Charge as HDFC Bank MD and CEO for Three Years
Anup Bagchi has officially taken charge as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of HDFC Bank from October 27, 2026. His appointment marks a significant leadership transition at one of India's largest private sector lenders. The Reserve Bank of India approved his appointment for a three-year term, following which he succeeded Sashidhar Jagdishan, whose tenure ended on October 26, 2026.
The appointment was announced by HDFC Bank in October after receiving the central bank's approval. Bagchi brings more than three decades of experience in financial services, including senior leadership positions in banking, capital markets, investment banking and insurance.
His appointment comes at an important time for HDFC Bank, which is working to sustain business growth, strengthen operational performance and maintain confidence among customers, investors and other stakeholders.
Anup Bagchi's Appointment and Tenure
HDFC Bank confirmed that the Reserve Bank of India approved Bagchi's appointment and remuneration on October 1, 2026. The bank's board subsequently approved his appointment as Managing Director and CEO for a three-year period beginning October 27, 2026, subject to shareholder approval as required under applicable provisions.
Bagchi's term is scheduled to run until October 26, 2029. He was also appointed as an additional director of the bank from October 2, 2026, pending the required shareholder approval.
He succeeds Sashidhar Jagdishan, who completed his tenure as the bank's MD and CEO at the close of business on October 26. Jagdishan had decided not to seek another term, prompting the bank to identify a successor for its top executive position.
The change marks an important stage in HDFC Bank's leadership succession. Bagchi's experience across different areas of financial services is expected to be relevant as the lender manages its future business priorities and regulatory responsibilities.
A Career Spanning More Than Three Decades
Bagchi has been associated with the ICICI Group since 1992. Over the course of his career, he has worked across treasury operations, retail banking, wholesale banking, investment banking, capital markets, wealth management and digital financial services.
His experience includes leading ICICI Securities as its Managing Director and CEO, serving as an Executive Director of ICICI Bank and heading ICICI Prudential Life Insurance.
Between 2017 and 2023, Bagchi served as an Executive Director of ICICI Bank. His responsibilities included retail, business and rural banking, followed by wholesale banking. During this period, he gained experience managing large banking operations and overseeing different customer and business segments.
He also served as chairman of ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company until May 2023 and held board positions at other financial services businesses within the group.
Since June 2023, Bagchi had been leading ICICI Prudential Life Insurance as its Managing Director and CEO. Under his leadership, the insurer reported growth in new business and protection products. The company's annualised premium equivalent reached Rs. 10,407 crore in the financial year 2024 to 2025, while profit after tax increased to Rs. 1,189 crore, according to the company's reported figures.
His professional background combines experience in banking and insurance, giving him exposure to different financial products, customer needs and regulatory environments.
Educational Background
Bagchi holds a management degree from the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore and an engineering degree from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.
His educational background and long career in financial services have supported his progression through senior executive positions. His experience in retail and wholesale banking, insurance and capital markets provides a broad foundation for leading a large banking institution.
Challenges Facing HDFC Bank
Bagchi takes charge at a time when HDFC Bank faces several important business priorities. Following its merger with Housing Development Finance Corporation, the bank has continued to manage the integration of operations, funding requirements and the balance between deposits and lending.
Maintaining healthy deposit growth is particularly important for banks because deposits provide a major source of funding for loans and other financial activities. A bank must attract and retain customer deposits while managing the cost of obtaining funds.
Profitability and asset quality are also key considerations. Banks need to grow their loan portfolios while maintaining appropriate credit standards, controlling operating expenses and managing potential loan defaults. Changes in interest rates and market conditions can influence lending margins and demand for credit.
HDFC Bank has also faced governance-related scrutiny and investor concerns in recent months. Its leadership will need to maintain transparent governance practices, effective risk management and clear communication with shareholders and regulators.
These are ongoing business challenges rather than issues that can be resolved through a leadership change alone. The results will depend on the bank's strategy, execution and broader economic conditions.
What Customers and Investors Can Expect
Bagchi's appointment does not automatically mean immediate changes to banking services, account terms or lending policies. Any operational or strategic changes will depend on decisions taken by the bank's management and board.
Customers should continue to follow official communications from HDFC Bank regarding changes to products, services, fees or policies. Investors will likely monitor future financial results, deposit growth, loan growth, profitability, asset quality and management guidance to assess the effect of the leadership transition.
The bank's ability to balance growth with financial stability will remain important. As a major lender in India's banking system, HDFC Bank also operates under regulatory requirements designed to protect depositors and support financial stability.
A New Chapter for HDFC Bank
Anup Bagchi's appointment marks the beginning of a new leadership chapter for HDFC Bank. His three-year term brings an experienced financial services executive to the top position, following Sashidhar Jagdishan's departure.
Bagchi's experience across ICICI Bank, ICICI Securities and ICICI Prudential Life Insurance gives him a broad understanding of banking, investments and insurance. The coming months will show how the new leadership approaches the bank's business priorities, operational performance and governance responsibilities.
For customers, investors and the wider banking sector, the key developments to watch will be the bank's financial performance, deposit mobilisation, lending strategy and ability to maintain confidence. The leadership transition is significant, but its long-term impact will depend on the decisions and results delivered during Bagchi's tenure.
