The Indian rupee is likely to remain under close watch as the Reserve Bank of India Governor indicated that the domestic currency may be undervalued in current market conditions, while also clarifying that there is no specific exchange rate target being pursued.

The remarks come at a time when currency markets have been experiencing fluctuations due to global economic uncertainty, foreign fund movements and changing interest rate expectations in major economies.

Financial market experts interpret the Governor’s statement as a signal that policymakers are monitoring exchange rate movements closely and may take calibrated steps if volatility increases. However, officials have emphasized that maintaining overall macroeconomic stability remains the primary objective.

According to currency analysts, the rupee has been influenced by multiple global factors including changes in crude oil prices, foreign institutional investment flows and the strength of the US dollar. Since India is a major importer of crude oil, any movement in global energy prices has a direct impact on the domestic currency.

Experts also point out that capital flows into and out of emerging markets play a significant role in determining exchange rate trends. When foreign investors pull funds out of equity or debt markets, pressure on the rupee tends to increase. Conversely, stronger inflows help support the currency.

The Governor’s comment that the rupee may be undervalued has been interpreted by markets as an indication that current levels might not fully reflect India’s economic fundamentals. However, officials have also maintained that exchange rate determination is largely market driven and not based on a fixed target.

Economists believe that policymakers may focus on managing excessive volatility rather than targeting a specific exchange rate level. This approach typically involves ensuring smooth market functioning while preventing sharp and disruptive currency movements.

Market participants also expect that the Reserve Bank of India may use a combination of tools such as foreign exchange interventions, liquidity management and regulatory measures to maintain stability in currency markets if needed.

At the same time, experts caution that excessive intervention in currency markets can have limitations, especially in a globally integrated financial system where external shocks can influence domestic trends.

The rupee’s movement is also closely linked to global interest rate policies, particularly decisions by the US Federal Reserve. Higher interest rates in advanced economies often lead to capital outflows from emerging markets, putting pressure on local currencies.

Despite short term volatility, India’s macroeconomic fundamentals including strong domestic demand, stable growth outlook and improving foreign exchange reserves continue to provide underlying support to the rupee.

Currency strategists suggest that the coming months will be important in determining the rupee’s direction as global economic conditions evolve. Investors and businesses are advised to closely monitor international developments, crude oil prices and central bank policy signals.

Overall, the latest remarks from the Reserve Bank of India Governor indicate a cautious but stable approach toward currency management, with emphasis on limiting volatility rather than pursuing a rigid exchange rate target.
