Unique Identification Authority of India has announced an extension of the free Aadhaar document update facility available through the official myAadhaar portal. According to the latest announcement, Aadhaar holders can now update their supporting identity and address documents online free of cost until June 14, 2027.
The decision has been taken to encourage residents across the country to keep their Aadhaar information updated and accurate. UIDAI stated that updating documents regularly helps improve the quality of demographic data linked to Aadhaar and reduces the chances of verification related issues while availing government and financial services.
Under the extended facility, residents can upload proof of identity and proof of address documents online through the myAadhaar portal without paying any update fee. Normally, document updates at Aadhaar enrolment centres may involve service charges, but the online facility remains free during the extended period.
Aadhaar is one of the most important identity documents used in India for accessing banking services, government welfare schemes, mobile connections, educational services and other official verification purposes. Maintaining updated records helps ensure smooth authentication and service delivery.
UIDAI has particularly encouraged individuals who have not updated their Aadhaar details for several years to verify and refresh their information. The authority noted that updated records help improve authentication success and reduce inconveniences during identity verification processes.
To update Aadhaar documents online, residents are required to visit the official myAadhaar portal using their Aadhaar number and registered mobile number. After logging into the portal using the one time password verification process, users can select the document update option and upload scanned copies of valid proof documents.
Accepted documents generally include identity and address proofs such as passport, voter identity card, driving licence, ration card, bank statement or utility bills, depending on the category of update requested. UIDAI verifies the uploaded documents before processing the request.
The online update process has become increasingly important as digital services expand across India. Government departments, financial institutions and telecom companies frequently use Aadhaar based verification systems for authentication and customer identification.
Industry experts believe the extension of the free update deadline will benefit millions of Aadhaar holders, especially people living in rural and semi urban areas who may not have updated their records in recent years. The move is also expected to reduce pressure at physical Aadhaar service centres.
UIDAI has repeatedly advised residents to use only official platforms for Aadhaar related services and avoid sharing sensitive information with unauthorised individuals or websites. The authority has also highlighted the importance of protecting Aadhaar details from misuse and online fraud.
The Aadhaar system currently serves as one of the world’s largest digital identity programmes and plays a central role in India’s digital governance framework. Aadhaar based authentication is widely integrated into banking, welfare distribution, tax systems and public service delivery mechanisms.
Technology and policy experts note that regular document verification helps maintain the reliability and efficiency of the Aadhaar ecosystem. Updated records also assist authorities in ensuring smoother implementation of government schemes and digital identity services.
Residents planning to update their Aadhaar details online have been advised to complete the process through the official portal before the extended deadline to continue benefiting from the free service facility.
