Former President Ram Nath Kovind has come out in favor of the One Nation One Election (ONOE) system, predicting that its implementation would have a positive impact on India's economy. According to Kovind, the country’s GDP could rise by 1 to 1.5% following the adoption of the ONOE framework.
In a public address, Kovind elaborated on how the simultaneous holding of national and state elections would reduce election-related expenses, leading to significant cost savings for the government. He also emphasized that this change could enhance governance by allowing elected officials to focus on long-term policies without the constant disruption of electoral cycles.
Kovind’s support for the ONOE system adds weight to ongoing discussions about electoral reforms in India. The proposal, which aims to consolidate elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and local bodies, is expected to bring more uniformity and coherence to the country's electoral system.
The former president also pointed out that the proposed change would streamline the electoral process, reduce the burden on public resources, and lead to a more stable political environment. By ensuring more efficient governance, he believes the country could unlock greater economic potential, thereby benefiting the overall growth trajectory.
Kovind’s comments are in line with the government’s ongoing efforts to explore the feasibility of the ONOE system. While the proposal has its supporters, it also faces opposition from various political groups, citing concerns over its implementation and the possible impact on federalism. However, with influential voices like Kovind backing the idea, it is expected to remain a topic of debate in Indian political discourse.
