Gold prices in India corrected sharply on Friday after scaling record highs in the previous session, creating uncertainty among investors and traders. The precious metal, which has been on a strong upward trajectory amid global economic concerns, saw a steep fall of nearly Rs 10000 per 10 grams within a single day.
In the national capital, 24-carat gold had surged to a new all-time high of Rs 183000 per 10 grams, including taxes, by Thursday evening. The rally was driven by strong global cues, rising geopolitical tensions, expectations of interest rate cuts by major central banks, and sustained buying from investors seeking safe-haven assets.
On the Multi Commodity Exchange, February gold futures climbed to a record Rs 180779 per 10 grams, while April delivery contracts touched a fresh peak of Rs 193096 per 10 grams. However, the momentum reversed sharply on Friday as profit booking set in across domestic and international markets.
According to price tracking platform GoodReturns, gold prices dropped to around Rs 170770 per 10 grams on Friday, compared to Rs 179010 per 10 grams in the previous session. Meanwhile, data from the Indian Bullion and Jewellers Association showed gold trading at approximately Rs 175340 per 10 grams during the morning hours, highlighting continued volatility.
Market analysts attribute the sudden correction to multiple factors, including profit booking after record highs, fluctuations in the US dollar, and short-term movements in global bond yields. A stronger dollar often makes gold more expensive for international buyers, leading to temporary price corrections.
Experts believe that while the short-term volatility may continue, the long-term outlook for gold remains supportive. Global uncertainties, inflation concerns, central bank buying, and expectations of monetary easing are likely to keep gold prices resilient over time.
For investors, the recent fall has opened up different strategies. Long-term investors may view the dip as an opportunity to accumulate gold gradually, especially through systematic investment plans or sovereign gold bonds. Short-term traders, however, are advised to remain cautious due to sharp price swings.
Financial advisors suggest avoiding panic decisions and aligning gold investments with overall portfolio goals. Gold continues to play an important role as a hedge against inflation and currency risks, but experts recommend maintaining balanced exposure rather than aggressive buying at volatile levels.
As global and domestic factors continue to influence prices, investors are advised to track international market trends, central bank policies, and currency movements before making fresh decisions. The coming days may offer more clarity on whether the recent fall is a temporary correction or the beginning of a broader consolidation phase.
