Gold prices remained under pressure in parts of the market on September 23, 2026, as investors assessed the outlook for interest rates, movements in the US dollar, crude oil prices and developments in the Middle East. Domestic gold prices also continued to show differences across cities because retail rates depend on local market conditions, purity, taxes and jeweller pricing.

In the domestic futures market, MCX gold for the October delivery was trading slightly lower during the morning session. Moneycontrol reported that MCX gold futures were down around 0.13 percent at Rs 1,53,420 per 10 grams at about 9:22 am. Spot gold was also lower in international markets during early trading.

The movement in gold prices comes as investors continue to monitor expectations surrounding interest rates. Higher interest rates can influence demand for non yielding assets such as gold because investors may find interest bearing assets relatively more attractive. Changes in expectations about the timing and pace of rate decisions can therefore affect international bullion prices.

The US dollar is another major factor influencing gold. Since gold is internationally traded in dollars, movements in the US currency can affect prices for buyers using other currencies. A stronger dollar can place pressure on gold prices, while a weaker dollar can provide support.

Geopolitical developments are also being closely watched by bullion market participants. Reports of discussions between the United States and Iran have influenced market sentiment and contributed to movements in oil and precious metals. Any changes in geopolitical tensions can affect demand for traditional safe haven assets such as gold.

Gold also remains an important purchase in the Indian market, particularly for jewellery, weddings, festivals and household savings. As a result, consumers often track daily changes in 22K and 24K prices before making purchases.

The most commonly followed retail categories are 24K, 22K and 18K gold. Twenty four karat gold represents the highest purity commonly quoted in the retail market, while 22K gold is widely used for jewellery. Eighteen karat gold contains a lower proportion of pure gold and is used for several types of jewellery and other products.

According to the citywise rates supplied for this article, Chennai recorded a 24K gold price of Rs 15,420 per gram. The corresponding 22K rate was Rs 14,135 per gram, while the 18K rate was Rs 11,905 per gram.

Mumbai was listed at Rs 15,420 per gram for 24K gold, Rs 14,135 for 22K gold and Rs 11,565 for 18K gold. Delhi was slightly higher at Rs 15,435 for 24K gold, Rs 14,150 for 22K gold and Rs 11,580 for 18K gold.

Kolkata, Bengaluru and Hyderabad were listed at Rs 15,420 per gram for 24K gold and Rs 14,135 for 22K gold. Their listed 18K rate was Rs 11,565 per gram.

Among the cities in the supplied list, Coimbatore and Madurai were quoted at Rs 15,474 per gram for 24K gold. The 22K rate was Rs 14,184 per gram, while 18K gold was listed at Rs 11,954 per gram.

Salem, Tirichy, Vellore, Tirupur and Tirunelveli were also listed at Rs 15,474 per gram for 24K gold, Rs 14,184 for 22K and Rs 11,954 for 18K.

Nashik, Vasai Virar, Bhiwandi and Latur were listed at Rs 15,479 per gram for 24K gold, Rs 14,189 for 22K gold and Rs 11,610 for 18K gold.

Ahmedabad and Vadodara were listed at Rs 15,425 per gram for 24K gold. The 22K price was Rs 14,140 and the 18K price was Rs 11,570.

Several other cities, including Jaipur, Lucknow, Vijayawada, Patna, Nagpur, Chandigarh, Surat, Bhubaneswar, Mangalore, Visakhapatnam and many other locations, were listed at Rs 15,332 per gram for 24K gold. Their 22K rate was Rs 14,054 per gram and their 18K rate was Rs 11,499.

These citywise prices should be treated as indicative retail rates rather than a uniform nationwide price. Gold prices can differ from one city to another because of transportation costs, local demand, jeweller margins, taxes and other market factors. Published rates can also change during the day.

There can also be differences between the price of bullion and the final amount paid by a jewellery customer. Jewellery bills can include making charges, applicable taxes and other charges. Therefore, the price per gram shown in a daily gold rate table should not automatically be treated as the final purchase price of jewellery.

For consumers planning to buy gold, purity is an important factor. A 24K rate cannot be directly compared with a 22K jewellery price without considering the difference in gold content. Similarly, an 18K product will normally have a lower gold value per gram because it contains less pure gold.

Hallmarking is another factor that buyers should consider when purchasing gold jewellery. Consumers should check the purity marking and other relevant details on the jewellery before completing a purchase.

The broader gold market is currently being influenced by several competing factors. On one side, geopolitical uncertainty can support demand for gold as a safe haven. On the other side, higher interest rate expectations and movements in the dollar can put pressure on bullion prices.

Oil prices are also relevant to the current market environment. Reports on September 23 indicated that crude prices were moving lower amid expectations that US Iran discussions could reduce the risk of prolonged supply disruptions. Changes in oil prices can influence inflation expectations and monetary policy outlooks, which in turn can affect gold.

International gold prices also showed weakness during early trading. Moneycontrol reported that spot gold declined around 0.60 percent to about 4,338 dollars per ounce, while US gold futures were slightly higher. This divergence demonstrates that different gold contracts can move differently depending on market conditions and trading times.

Domestic gold prices do not always move in exactly the same direction as international spot prices. The Indian rupee, import costs, domestic demand and local market conditions can influence the final Indian price.

For investors and consumers, the daily gold rate therefore needs to be viewed in the context of both domestic and international markets. A single day's movement does not necessarily indicate the longer term direction of gold prices.

On September 23, the key factors being monitored include US interest rate expectations, dollar movements, crude oil prices, geopolitical developments and domestic market demand. These factors can continue to influence gold prices through the trading session.

Consumers planning to purchase jewellery should also compare rates from different jewellers and check whether the quoted price includes making charges and applicable taxes. The final jewellery bill can be considerably different from the headline gold rate per gram.

The latest available market data shows that gold remains at elevated price levels despite short term fluctuations. The supplied citywise retail rates provide a reference for consumers checking 24K, 22K and 18K gold prices across major Indian cities.

Gold rates can change during the day, and jewellers may update their prices at different times. Buyers should therefore verify the latest rate directly with the jeweller before making a purchase.

For September 23, 2026, Chennai and several Tamil Nadu cities in the supplied table are listed at higher rates than some other locations. Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem, Tirupur, Tirunelveli and several other Tamil Nadu cities are listed at Rs 15,474 per gram for 24K gold, Rs 14,184 for 22K gold and Rs 11,954 for 18K gold.

The gold market remains sensitive to international developments, particularly monetary policy expectations and geopolitical news. Investors will continue to monitor these factors as the market assesses the direction of precious metals in the coming sessions.
