Gold prices in India showed minor declines on January 1, 2026, following a period of steady gains in recent weeks. The Indian bullion market witnessed fluctuations as traders adjusted positions amid global economic indicators, domestic demand, and currency movements.
According to the Indian Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), gold was trading at Rs 1,33,195 per 10 grams on Thursday morning. Meanwhile, Goodreturns reported the commodity at Rs 1,35,030 per 10 grams, indicating a slight variation based on local demand and retail supply. The All India Sarafa Association noted that in Delhi, gold prices fell for the third consecutive day, reaching Rs 1,37,700 per 10 grams, inclusive of all taxes.
The recent correction follows a surge in prices that had been supported by strong global demand, geopolitical tensions, and rising investor interest in safe-haven assets. Gold is often considered a hedge against inflation and currency fluctuations, making it a popular investment at the start of the year.
City-wise rates showed slight differences depending on local supply, taxes, and demand. In Mumbai, gold was trading around Rs 1,36,800 per 10 grams, while Chennai recorded prices of approximately Rs 1,35,900 per 10 grams. Traders observed that fluctuations were largely influenced by changes in the international gold price and the Indian rupee’s performance against the US dollar.
Market analysts say that gold may continue to experience modest ups and downs in the near term, as global economic trends—including US inflation data, Federal Reserve decisions, and stock market performance—affect investor sentiment. Domestic factors, such as jewellery demand during the wedding and festival seasons, also contribute to price movements.
Silver prices mirrored the trend in gold, showing minor corrections in major markets. Investors continue to monitor precious metals as an alternative investment option, particularly when equity markets show volatility.
For consumers and investors planning purchases or sales, experts advise keeping track of city-specific rates, as slight differences may occur due to local taxes and making charges. Digital platforms and bullion associations regularly update rates to reflect real-time trading conditions.
Overall, while gold prices have eased slightly today, the metal remains a key investment instrument in India. Analysts suggest that buyers may wait for minor dips to invest, while long-term investors continue to hold gold as a hedge against economic uncertainties and market volatility.
