India experienced a significant surge in gold imports, reaching $14.86 billion in November, a jump that has raised concerns about the trade deficit. This sharp increase, which is largely attributed to the festive and wedding season demand, contributed to a record trade deficit of $37.84 billion for the month. The government's review of the gold import data comes amid concerns over potential calculation errors in the reported figures. The increase in gold imports, paired with the reduction in customs duties and global uncertainties, has had a significant impact on the country's current account deficit.
For the period between April and November, India's gold imports have grown by 49%, amounting to $49 billion, which has further exacerbated the trade imbalance. The rupee's sharp decline to an all-time low of 84.91 against the US Dollar on December 16 has also raised concerns regarding the country's economic outlook. As the government investigates the gold import data, it remains to be seen whether there were any errors in the calculation or if this surge in demand is indeed accurate.
