Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has introduced a new FASTag-based toll pass initiative aimed at offering relief to regular highway commuters. The pass will allow users to make up to 200 toll-free trips annually on national highways for a one-time payment of Rs 3,000. This scheme is scheduled to begin from August 15, 2025, and will be available to eligible vehicle owners across India.
FASTag, a prepaid RFID-based system, was introduced by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to facilitate seamless toll collection and reduce waiting time at toll plazas. The system has seen widespread adoption in recent years, and the newly announced pass is the latest step toward enhancing its utility and convenience.
According to Minister Gadkari, the Rs 3,000 pass aims to ease the burden on commuters who frequently travel across state and district borders. The scheme targets daily or weekly travellers such as professionals, logistics personnel, and local residents who use national highways for routine travel. The initiative also aligns with the government’s broader strategy to improve digital infrastructure and promote cashless payments.
Key Features of the Scheme:
- One-Time Payment: The user pays Rs 3,000 for 200 highway trips in a year.
- Pan-India Coverage: The pass will be valid at all FASTag-enabled toll booths across national highways.
- Digital Access: The entire process—from application to activation—will be handled digitally through the NHAI portal and approved FASTag partners.
- Vehicle-Specific Use: The pass is linked to the FASTag account and registration number of the vehicle.
Gadkari stated that the move is intended to provide relief not only to individual users but also to small businesses and service providers who depend heavily on road transportation. Additionally, the reduced congestion at toll plazas is expected to cut fuel consumption and vehicle emissions, contributing to the ministry’s environmental goals.
Transport experts have welcomed the announcement, calling it a significant incentive for regular highway users. The scheme also encourages broader FASTag adoption, thereby improving traffic efficiency and operational ease at toll booths.
However, authorities have clarified that any misuse of the pass, such as transferring it between vehicles or exceeding the limit of 200 trips, will lead to penalties or deactivation of the account. The NHAI has been instructed to implement strict monitoring mechanisms and ensure transparency in usage.
Eligible vehicle owners can start applying for the pass from July-end through banks and digital payment partners linked to the FASTag network. Once activated, users will receive real-time updates and trip tracking via SMS and app notifications.
This new FASTag pass scheme is part of the government's continued efforts to modernize India’s road infrastructure and make highway travel more efficient and affordable for frequent users.
