Government Prioritises Domestic Gas Supply for LPG CNG and Piped Gas Amid Middle East Disruptions

By prioritizing domestic natural gas for LPG production and city gas distribution networks, the government aims to ensure that household cooking fuel and public transport fuel remain available without interruption.

The Government of India has introduced a revised policy for the allocation of domestically produced natural gas in order to ensure stable energy supplies to households and essential services. The move comes at a time when global energy markets are facing uncertainty due to ongoing tensions and disruptions in the Middle East.

According to a government notification issued recently, sectors involved in the supply of household cooking fuel and public transport fuel will receive priority access to domestic natural gas. The decision aims to safeguard essential energy needs in the country and reduce the impact of possible supply disruptions in international markets.

Under the revised allocation policy, natural gas will first be supplied to industries involved in the production and distribution of liquefied petroleum gas. Liquefied petroleum gas, commonly used in Indian households for cooking, has been added to the list of priority sectors receiving domestic gas supply.

Earlier the main priority sectors for domestic natural gas allocation included compressed natural gas used for transportation and piped natural gas supplied to households through city gas distribution networks. With the new notification LPG production has been included along with these sectors to ensure uninterrupted availability of cooking fuel.

The policy states that the requirements of LPG producers, compressed natural gas suppliers and piped cooking gas providers will be fully met before domestic natural gas is supplied to other industrial users. The government has said that these sectors will receive one hundred percent of their average natural gas consumption based on data from the previous six months.

Officials have explained that the change in allocation strategy is intended to strengthen energy security for households and public transportation systems. Since LPG is widely used for cooking in Indian homes, ensuring stable supply of the fuel remains a priority for the government.

Energy analysts say that developments in the Middle East have the potential to influence global energy supply chains. Any disruption in oil and gas trade routes can affect imports for countries that depend on international suppliers for part of their energy needs.

India imports a significant portion of its crude oil and natural gas requirements from global markets including the Middle East. As a result the government regularly monitors international developments and may adjust domestic energy policies to protect consumers and maintain supply stability.

By prioritizing domestic natural gas for LPG production and city gas distribution networks, the government aims to ensure that household cooking fuel and public transport fuel remain available without interruption. The policy also reflects a broader strategy to manage energy resources carefully during periods of global uncertainty.

Experts note that city gas distribution systems have expanded rapidly in India over the past decade. More households are now connected to piped cooking gas networks and the use of compressed natural gas for vehicles has also increased in several urban centers.

The revised natural gas allocation policy is expected to help maintain supply stability for these growing sectors while balancing the needs of other industries that depend on natural gas as a fuel or raw material.

The government has stated that it will continue to monitor energy supply conditions and take necessary measures to protect consumer interests and maintain stable fuel availability across the country.
