The Government of India has reported a significant increase in the adoption of piped natural gas connections across the country with nearly three lakh new connections added during the month of March The development comes at a time when energy supply chains are facing challenges due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia
According to official information around six thousand consumers have voluntarily surrendered their liquefied petroleum gas connections over the past few days This move is being seen as a step towards ensuring better distribution of cooking gas particularly for households that do not have access to piped gas infrastructure
Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal has encouraged more consumers to consider transitioning to piped natural gas where available He noted that individuals who have given up their LPG connections are contributing to a more efficient allocation of resources and supporting those who rely solely on cylinder based supply
The government has been promoting the expansion of piped natural gas networks in urban and semi urban areas as part of its broader energy strategy PNG is considered a convenient and continuous source of fuel for households reducing dependence on cylinder deliveries and storage concerns
In regions where piped gas infrastructure is already in place authorities have made it mandatory for eligible households to adopt PNG connections Officials have indicated that LPG supply in such areas may be gradually phased out after a transition period of three months This policy aims to streamline distribution and improve efficiency in energy usage
To facilitate the transition the government has introduced an online portal where consumers can register their interest in surrendering LPG connections The process includes the collection of cylinders from households and the refund of security deposits through authorized distributors This initiative is designed to make the shift to piped gas as smooth as possible for consumers
The increase in PNG connections is also expected to ease pressure on LPG cylinder stocks which have been under strain due to supply disruptions linked to international developments By encouraging households with access to alternative energy sources to switch the government aims to ensure that limited resources are directed towards those in need
