India-Pakistan Trade Suspended: Which Products May See Price Hikes and Who Faces the Bigger Impact?

Trade analysts observe that India’s economy is unlikely to suffer any major consequences , as its trade with Pakistan accounts for less than 0.1% of total exports and imports.

In the wake of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, bilateral trade between the two countries has come to a standstill. This suspension, although limited in scope due to already restricted trade relations, is expected to impact the prices of several key commodities, particularly in Pakistan, while also affecting selected sectors in India.

Historically, India and Pakistan have maintained limited trade engagements. However, over the years, specific categories such as agricultural products, textiles, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals have continued to cross borders under special arrangements or via third-party routes. The latest halt is expected to bring further disruptions, affecting market supply and prices, especially in Pakistan.

One of the major categories likely to be affected is dry fruits, particularly almonds and pistachios, which are imported into India via Afghanistan and Pakistan. In the absence of smooth trade routes, prices of these items may rise temporarily until alternate sources are secured. On the other side, Pakistan’s imports of Indian pharmaceuticals, agricultural inputs, and textile machinery are expected to be severely hit.

Trade analysts observe that India’s economy is unlikely to suffer any major consequences, as its trade with Pakistan accounts for less than 0.1% of total exports and imports. India has well-established alternative markets for both importing and exporting essential goods. Moreover, New Delhi has already been focused on reducing dependencies on politically unstable trade partners, including Pakistan and China.

In contrast, Pakistan’s economy is expected to face a much sharper impact, especially in sectors where Indian products dominate due to affordability and accessibility. The agriculture sector in Pakistan, for instance, relies on Indian-manufactured pesticides and fertilizers. Pharmaceutical ingredients sourced from India also form a significant portion of Pakistan’s medicine production. With the trade route closed, Islamabad will now have to seek costlier alternatives from other countries, which could lead to higher prices for essential drugs and food items.

Furthermore, border states such as Punjab and Rajasthan, which have traditionally facilitated cross-border trade via land routes, may experience temporary disruption in local commerce. However, with sufficient domestic alternatives and access to international ports, Indian traders are expected to realign quickly.

The move is being seen as a part of India's broader diplomatic stance in response to recent events. The Indian government has emphasized national security and strategic priorities over bilateral trade engagements with hostile neighbors. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s business community and economic planners are reportedly concerned over the increasing isolation of the country in South Asian trade dynamics.

In summary, the suspension of trade is likely to cause short-term price disruptions for a few commodities in India, while Pakistan is set to face more profound and prolonged challenges. The economic impact further highlights the asymmetry in trade dependencies between the two nations and reinforces India's position as a more self-sufficient and resilient economy.
