Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has reiterated that India’s economic trajectory remains robust, despite heightened global trade tensions and geopolitical uncertainty. Speaking at a press interaction during her official visit to Washington D.C., she mentioned that both the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank have praised India’s sustained economic progress, reforms, and potential to be a key driver of global growth.
The remarks were made following high-level meetings with financial leaders and global policymakers during the Spring Meetings of the IMF and World Bank. Sitharaman noted that India continues to exhibit macroeconomic stability, disciplined fiscal management, and inclusive growth strategies—all of which have earned global recognition.
“India is not only maintaining its growth momentum but is also being seen as a stabilizing force in a highly volatile global trade environment,” Sitharaman said.
Economic Indicators Speak Strongly
India’s economy has remained one of the fastest-growing among major economies, with the IMF projecting a GDP growth rate of over 6.5% for FY 2025. The Finance Minister pointed out that inflation is under control, foreign exchange reserves remain robust, and structural reforms have enhanced investor confidence.
The IMF’s Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and World Bank President Ajay Banga reportedly praised India’s efforts in digital inclusion, infrastructure development, and its role as a global technology and service hub.
India as a Global Economic Partner
Sitharaman emphasized that India’s global engagement is growing, not just as a consumer market, but also as a policy leader. From hosting the G20 Presidency in 2023 to leading digital public infrastructure discussions, India is shaping the global economic narrative.
She also mentioned that several international companies are considering India as a primary manufacturing base amid shifting global supply chains.
Addressing Global Trade Worries
Commenting on global trade uncertainties and conflicts, Sitharaman said that India is prepared to navigate through geopolitical disruptions by focusing on domestic resilience and export diversification. The government, she added, continues to prioritize production-linked incentive (PLI) schemes and ease of doing business reforms.
Conclusion
With continued recognition from global financial institutions and strong domestic fundamentals, India is positioned as a future-ready economy, ready to lead in innovation, sustainability, and inclusive development. As the world grapples with economic instability, India’s steady rise is being seen as a beacon of hope in the global economy.
