The sharp rise in these accounts over the past few years has raised concerns about the lack of awareness among employees regarding their EPF balances and the importance of maintaining active accounts.

The total balance in inoperative Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) accounts has risen by an astounding five-fold over the last six years, now standing at a significant Rs 8,505 crore. This increase is indicative of a growing number of dormant EPF accounts where employees have either stopped contributing or have not claimed their balances for extended periods.

Inoperative accounts refer to those where there have been no contributions or claims for a period of three years, often due to workers changing jobs without transferring their EPF balances or forgetting to withdraw their accumulated savings. The sharp rise in these accounts over the past few years has raised concerns about the lack of awareness among employees regarding their EPF balances and the importance of maintaining active accounts.

This surge in inoperative EPF balances also highlights the challenge faced by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) in ensuring that employees are aware of the need to keep their accounts active or transfer the funds when switching jobs. EPFO has taken several initiatives to encourage employees to link their accounts and track their balances via digital platforms.

Experts suggest that one of the main reasons behind the rise in inactive accounts could be the growing number of informal sector workers and a shift toward freelancing and gig work. Without stable employment or formal sector jobs, many employees often fail to manage their EPF contributions effectively.

While the growth in inoperative EPF accounts may seem concerning, it also serves as a reminder to employees to stay proactive about their retirement savings and to ensure that their EPF accounts are regularly updated or consolidated. With digital tools becoming more accessible, it’s easier for workers to track and manage their EPF balances, reducing the chances of funds becoming dormant in the future.

The rise in inoperative EPF amounts also reflects the need for continued financial literacy campaigns aimed at improving understanding of retirement planning and long-term savings among the workforce.
