IRCTC Introduces OTP Verification for Tatkal Bookings to Enhance Security

The measure covers bookings made via the IRCTC website, mobile application, and physical railway ticket counters, ensuring uniform application across platforms.

The Indian Railways has announced a significant update to the Tatkal ticket booking process by introducing OTP (One-Time Password) verification to enhance security and reduce fraudulent bookings. This new system came into effect on December 1, 2025, and is part of the broader initiative to modernize and safeguard online and offline railway ticketing services.

Initially, the OTP verification system will be implemented on Train No. 12009/12010, the Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express, before being extended to all trains and Tatkal booking channels. The measure covers bookings made via the IRCTC website, mobile application, and physical railway ticket counters, ensuring uniform application across platforms.

Under the new system, passengers booking Tatkal tickets must provide a valid mobile number. Once the booking process reaches the OTP verification stage, a system-generated OTP will be sent to the registered number. Only after entering this OTP correctly will the Tatkal ticket be issued. This step ensures that tickets are confirmed only to genuine passengers, preventing the misuse of personal details or automated booking tools.

Western Railway, in an official statement, highlighted the importance of this change: "There is an important modification in the Tatkal booking system in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Railway Board. Tatkal tickets will now be issued only after authentication of a system-generated One Time Password (OTP). This OTP will be sent to the mobile number furnished by the passenger at the time of booking, and the ticket will be issued only after successful validation of the OTP."

The introduction of OTP verification addresses several issues that have plagued the Tatkal booking system. Previously, Tatkal tickets were prone to scalping, automated bot bookings, and misuse of passenger details, leading to genuine travelers often missing out on tickets. The OTP system acts as a security layer to authenticate the passenger and reduce fraudulent bookings, making the process fairer and more transparent.

Passengers are advised to keep their mobile numbers updated in the IRCTC database to ensure seamless booking. In case of any OTP-related issues, customer support through IRCTC and railway counters will assist travelers in completing their bookings. Experts suggest that this measure will not only curb unauthorized ticket bookings but also increase trust in digital and counter-based Tatkal ticketing systems.

The OTP verification initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ ongoing efforts to leverage technology for improved service delivery, enhanced passenger security, and efficiency in ticket management. By combining convenience with robust authentication measures, the Railways aims to provide a smoother and safer travel experience for millions of Tatkal users across the country.

In conclusion, the OTP-based Tatkal booking system marks a critical step in improving security and reliability for railway passengers. Travelers are now required to complete OTP verification for Tatkal tickets, starting with the Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express, with the system expanding to all trains and platforms. This move ensures greater accountability, reduces misuse, and strengthens passenger confidence in Indian Railways’ ticketing services.

Western Railway, in an official statement, highlighted the importance of this change: "There is an important modification in the Tatkal booking system in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Railway Board.
