Mumbai – Major Indian metal companies are increasingly turning their attention toward the domestic market, as the government’s continued emphasis on infrastructure development and housing projects fuels demand for steel, aluminum, and other key industrial metals. Industry experts say the shift comes amid declining export orders due to global economic uncertainty and trade restrictions.
Leading players such as Tata Steel, JSW Steel, Hindalco, and SAIL are recalibrating their supply chains and marketing strategies to better serve the Indian market. Construction of roads, bridges, metro networks, and affordable housing projects under schemes like PM Awas Yojana is expected to drive consumption of structural steel and aluminum.
“The Indian market is showing strong momentum, particularly from the infrastructure and automotive sectors,” said a senior executive from a top steel firm. “While exports remain important, we are seeing greater profitability and stability in domestic demand.”
In FY24, India’s finished steel consumption grew by over 12%, and analysts forecast similar or higher growth in FY25. The government’s capital expenditure allocation in the Union Budget 2025–26 has further boosted market sentiment, with a record ₹11.1 lakh crore earmarked for infrastructure.
Aluminum producers are also witnessing higher offtake from sectors such as power transmission, electric vehicles, and packaging. As global commodity prices stabilize, Indian producers expect better margins by focusing on high-volume local contracts.
The move is also seen as a strategic hedge against global price volatility and geopolitical tensions that have impacted trade flows in recent quarters. By prioritizing domestic sales, companies can reduce logistics costs, shorten delivery timelines, and strengthen relationships with key industrial customers.
Industry bodies like FICCI and CII have welcomed the shift, suggesting that greater alignment between manufacturers and government infrastructure agencies will further support Make in India goals.
With a robust project pipeline and supportive policy environment, metal companies see India as the growth engine for the coming decade, reducing reliance on uncertain global markets.
