A recent financial report has highlighted the robust growth trajectory of Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) in India, projecting that the sector will outpace the country’s GDP growth in the financial year 2024-25. The report underscores the increasing dominance of NBFCs in the retail lending segment, positioning them as a crucial driver of credit penetration across diverse population segments.

Strong Retail Lending Momentum

The report indicates that NBFCs are expected to register credit growth in the range of 13% to 15% in FY25, significantly higher than the projected GDP growth rate of 6.5% to 7%. This growth is largely attributed to sustained demand in segments such as personal loans, two-wheeler financing, consumer durables, and microfinance.

NBFCs are also witnessing strong traction in rural and semi-urban markets, where traditional banks have limited reach or operate cautiously. This allows NBFCs to serve first-time borrowers, gig workers, and small business owners who often face hurdles accessing formal credit from traditional financial institutions.

Factors Driving Growth

Several key factors are contributing to the NBFC sector’s growth momentum:

Expanding Credit Demand: Rising disposable income and consumer aspirations have led to higher demand for personal and consumption loans.

Digital Lending Platforms: Many NBFCs are leveraging technology to streamline loan processing, improve customer experience, and reduce operational costs.

Flexible Underwriting Models: Unlike traditional banks, NBFCs often use alternative credit assessment tools, enabling them to lend to customers with limited credit history.

Strategic Partnerships: Collaborations between NBFCs and fintech firms are enhancing credit delivery, especially in underserved markets.

Shift in Lending Landscape

The report also highlights a gradual shift in the retail lending landscape. While banks continue to hold a large share of total credit, they are becoming more conservative in the unsecured loan segment due to rising delinquency risks and regulatory advisories.

NBFCs, on the other hand, have increased their risk appetite in specific segments, particularly in smaller-ticket loans and consumer financing, allowing them to tap into new borrower bases. Additionally, stronger capital positions and regulatory compliance have helped large NBFCs build greater investor and borrower trust.

Regulatory Oversight and Future Outlook

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has implemented a stricter regulatory framework for NBFCs under the Scale-Based Regulation (SBR) system, aiming to improve governance and risk management. Industry experts believe that this increased scrutiny will enhance the sector’s stability and long-term credibility.

Looking ahead, NBFCs are expected to play a pivotal role in supporting India’s consumption-led growth and financial inclusion goals. With rising digital adoption, improved rural connectivity, and evolving borrower preferences, NBFCs are well-positioned to capture a larger share of the credit market in FY25 and beyond.
