Finance Minister Sitharaman reassured legislators that the government is committed to tackling non-performing assets in banks while providing targeted funds for health and national security through dedicated cess revenue.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman provided key updates in Parliament regarding the government’s financial and economic measures. One of the significant announcements was the introduction of a new health and security cess on pan masala. The Finance Minister clarified that the cess would not disrupt GST collections, as the revenue generated will be dedicated exclusively to funding health initiatives and national security measures. This step aims to ensure a focused allocation of resources for critical sectors without affecting regular tax inflows.

In another development, Public Sector Banks (PSBs) have written off a total of ₹6.15 lakh crore in bad loans over the past five years. While these loans have been formally written off from bank balance sheets, the liabilities of borrowers remain enforceable. The government has emphasized that recovery efforts will continue to minimize losses and improve banking sector efficiency. Analysts note that the write-offs reflect both proactive measures to clean up bank books and the challenges of managing non-performing assets in India’s financial system.

Additionally, the government announced plans to shut 25 Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) to improve operational efficiency and reduce fiscal burden. These closures are part of a broader strategy to restructure public sector companies, focus on viable enterprises, and optimize resource allocation. Officials stated that affected employees and stakeholders would be provided due support as per existing policies and regulations.

Parliament also received updates regarding the introduction of new income tax forms. The Finance Ministry aims to simplify the filing process and enhance compliance while ensuring transparency in reporting income and deductions. These new forms are expected to be rolled out soon, enabling taxpayers to accurately declare their income and fulfill legal obligations efficiently.

Experts observe that these combined measures reflect the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen financial governance and institutional efficiency. By writing off bad loans, closing non-performing CPSEs, and introducing simplified tax forms, the government is attempting to streamline operations across banking, public enterprises, and taxation systems. These steps are seen as critical to improving the investment climate, boosting economic stability, and ensuring better utilization of public resources.

The Parliament session emphasized the need for transparency, accountability, and effective resource allocation in both public and financial institutions. Finance Minister Sitharaman reassured legislators that the government is committed to tackling non-performing assets in banks while providing targeted funds for health and national security through dedicated cess revenue.

Overall, these announcements underline the government’s approach to proactive financial management, institutional restructuring, and improved governance. Observers note that continued monitoring and follow-up actions will be essential to achieve intended outcomes, particularly in recovering written-off loans, managing CPSE closures, and implementing the new income tax forms efficiently.
