Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta has said that the Indian economy is witnessing a phase of sustained and accelerating growth without signs of prolonged stagnation. Delivering the 14th Foundation Day lecture at the Centre for Development Studies on February 24 2026 she described India economic trajectory as one marked by stability and steady expansion.

According to Gupta India growth performance over the past four and a half decades reflects a structural shift towards higher and more consistent expansion. She noted that unlike earlier periods when growth cycles were marked by volatility and extended slowdowns the current phase demonstrates resilience and continuity. Over the years India has implemented financial sector reforms inflation targeting frameworks and fiscal consolidation measures that have contributed to a more predictable economic environment. These policy measures she suggested have reduced vulnerability to external shocks and domestic disruptions.

She further explained that the Indian economy has shown an ability to recover from global headwinds including financial market volatility commodity price fluctuations and pandemic related disruptions. The resilience of domestic demand combined with improvements in infrastructure digitalization and financial inclusion has supported medium term growth prospects.

The Deputy Governor pointed out that sustained economic expansion requires not only stable macroeconomic indicators but also productivity improvements and investment momentum. She noted that India has seen increasing integration into global supply chains and growing participation in services exports which have added to growth dynamics.
