RBI Likely To Keep Repo Rate Unchanged At 5.25% In Upcoming MPC Meeting

With both inflation and GDP growth expected to show increases compared to current levels, the central bank may find it appropriate to maintain the repo rate.

India’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting from February 4 to 6, 2026, is attracting close attention from economists, investors, and financial markets, as the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is widely expected to maintain its key policy rate at 5.25%. Analysts and market participants anticipate that the MPC will adopt a neutral stance, keeping monetary conditions stable while monitoring inflation and economic growth indicators.

A recent report by YES Bank suggests that, based on the last rate cuts in this monetary cycle, the RBI may enter a “long pause” in its policy rates. The report notes that the duration of the pause is difficult to determine but is likely unless economic growth significantly underperforms, which is not the current expectation. This aligns with the broader consensus among economists that India’s economic fundamentals remain strong, supporting a wait-and-watch approach.

Chief Economist at Bank of Baroda, Madan Sabnavis, pointed out that the upcoming Consumer Price Index (CPI) and GDP data are critical to the MPC’s decision. With both inflation and GDP growth expected to show increases compared to current levels, the central bank may find it appropriate to maintain the repo rate. Sabnavis added that this approach allows the RBI to balance the twin objectives of ensuring price stability and supporting sustained economic growth.

Over the past year, the RBI has carefully calibrated monetary policy to manage inflationary pressures while stimulating growth. Despite global uncertainties, India’s economy has shown resilience, supported by strong domestic demand, robust services and manufacturing sectors, and steady capital flows. In this context, holding the repo rate steady at 5.25% is seen as a prudent measure to maintain financial stability and investor confidence.

Market participants will also watch the RBI’s forward guidance and commentary on liquidity conditions. Analysts expect the central bank to maintain its accommodative stance where needed, providing sufficient credit support to key sectors while keeping an eye on inflation trends. The MPC’s decision will have implications for lending rates, bond yields, and investment decisions across sectors, making it a key event for the Indian economy.

The potential pause in rate action also reflects the RBI’s cautious approach to global economic volatility and domestic inflationary pressures. By maintaining the current policy rate, the central bank can carefully assess the impact of previous rate cuts, monitor the performance of various economic sectors, and ensure that growth momentum is sustained without triggering inflation spikes.

Overall, the February MPC meeting is expected to confirm stability in India’s monetary policy. Investors, banks, and corporates are likely to interpret a rate pause as a signal of measured confidence in economic growth while keeping the RBI’s commitment to inflation management intact. The decision is expected to support steady credit flows, market stability, and continued investor confidence in the Indian economy.
