The Indian rupee strengthened in early trade on Monday, gaining 22 paise to trade at 89.45 against the US dollar, recovering from recent record lows. The appreciation provided some relief to market participants after weeks of pressure driven by global headwinds and strong demand for the US currency.
According to forex traders, the rupee’s recovery was supported by multiple factors, including possible intervention by the Reserve Bank of India in the foreign exchange market. Central bank intervention is often aimed at curbing excessive volatility and maintaining orderly market conditions, especially during periods of sharp currency movements.
Another key factor contributing to the rupee’s rise was an increase in corporate dollar inflows. Exporters selling dollars and foreign fund inflows into domestic equities and debt markets helped boost supply in the forex market, lending support to the local currency. Additionally, a decline in global crude oil prices eased pressure on the rupee, as India is a major importer of crude oil and lower prices help improve the country’s trade balance.
The rupee had recently weakened to record lows amid a strong US dollar, driven by expectations of prolonged higher interest rates in the United States and global economic uncertainty. Rising geopolitical tensions and risk-averse sentiment among investors had also weighed on emerging market currencies, including the rupee.
Market analysts noted that the latest recovery suggests a temporary stabilisation, but cautioned that sustained appreciation would depend on broader global cues. Movements in the US dollar index, crude oil prices, and foreign capital flows are expected to remain key drivers for the rupee in the near term.
The Reserve Bank of India has consistently emphasised that it does not target a specific exchange rate but intervenes to prevent excessive volatility. Economists believe that the central bank’s presence in the market has helped limit sharp depreciation and maintain confidence among investors.
Meanwhile, domestic macroeconomic fundamentals continue to provide underlying support to the rupee. India’s economic growth outlook remains relatively strong compared to many global peers, and stable inflation trends have offered some comfort to policymakers and market participants.
However, experts warn that challenges remain. Global monetary policy uncertainty, fluctuations in crude oil prices, and geopolitical developments could continue to influence currency movements. As a result, the rupee may experience periods of volatility despite intermittent recoveries.
For now, the rupee’s early gains reflect improved sentiment and supportive factors in the forex market. Traders and investors will closely monitor upcoming economic data, central bank signals, and global developments to assess the currency’s direction in the coming sessions.
