The State Bank of India (SBI) has released a report analyzing the potential effects of former US President Donald Trump’s proposed tariff policies on India’s exports. The findings indicate that while there may be some disruptions, India’s export sector is resilient enough to withstand the impact. The report states that India's strong trade relationships, diversified export base, and competitive industries will help mitigate any adverse effects.
Trump, who is running for re-election in the US, has hinted at imposing tariffs on imports if he returns to office. However, SBI economists argue that India’s trade surplus with the US is driven by sectors that have a strong demand and lower dependency on tariff-sensitive goods. Key industries such as pharmaceuticals, IT services, and textiles are expected to remain stable due to their high competitiveness and necessity in the American market.
Furthermore, India has been expanding its trade partnerships with countries in Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, which could help absorb any potential losses from US tariffs. The government’s focus on enhancing manufacturing through initiatives like ‘Make in India’ and trade agreements with other nations will also contribute to economic stability.
The report reassures Indian exporters that while tariff changes may pose short-term challenges, India’s adaptability and strong global positioning will likely prevent any major economic setbacks. Policy analysts suggest that Indian businesses should continue diversifying markets and strengthening trade agreements to maintain export growth despite uncertainties in US trade policies.
