Avoid groups or channels that claim “guaranteed profits,” “insider tips,” or “secret strategies.” The advisory comes at a time when retail participation in the stock market is at an all-time high, especially among first-time investors and youth using digital platforms.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has raised a red flag over the growing menace of investment scams being circulated on social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, and YouTube. The capital markets regulator issued an official advisory warning investors to exercise caution and not fall prey to unverified tips or fraudulent investment schemes promoted by unregistered entities.

SEBI highlighted that several individuals and groups are falsely posing as market experts or financial influencers, often making unrealistic promises of high returns. These entities typically use social media to spread misleading content, urging users to invest in stocks, derivatives, or other financial instruments, often without proper disclosures or risk warnings.

In its advisory, SEBI stated,
"Investors are advised to deal only with SEBI-registered intermediaries and follow due diligence before making investment decisions. They should avoid getting influenced by unauthorized investment tips or schemes on social media."

The regulator also warned that acting on unverified financial advice can result in significant monetary losses, especially when offered by entities that are not accountable to any regulatory framework. SEBI emphasized that genuine investment services are always provided through registered advisors, brokers, and portfolio managers, whose details can be verified on SEBI’s official website.

To help protect the investing public, SEBI has urged individuals to:

Verify credentials of anyone offering investment advice.

Refrain from sharing personal or financial information on unknown platforms or with unknown individuals.

Report suspicious content or fraudulent schemes via SEBI’s grievance redressal portal (SCORES).

Avoid groups or channels that claim “guaranteed profits,” “insider tips,” or “secret strategies.”

The advisory comes at a time when retail participation in the stock market is at an all-time high, especially among first-time investors and youth using digital platforms. Unfortunately, this trend has also made social media a fertile ground for scammers who exploit the lack of financial literacy and regulatory awareness.

SEBI’s recent action aligns with its broader mission of protecting investor interests, ensuring fair practices, and fostering financial awareness and inclusion. The regulator has been stepping up efforts through educational campaigns, collaboration with other agencies, and stronger enforcement mechanisms against fraudulent entities.

Investors are strongly advised to stay informed, cross-check all investment-related information, and prioritize safety over quick returns. As financial markets become more accessible through technology, the responsibility to remain vigilant lies with every market participant.
