Silver prices recorded a dramatic fall on January 31, 2026, ending a strong rally and triggering concern among investors and traders. After witnessing a historic surge over the past year, silver prices turned sharply volatile, with the metal registering one of its steepest single day declines on the Multi Commodity Exchange.
On MCX, Silver March futures dropped by Rs 1,07,968 per kilogram, or nearly 27 percent, to settle at Rs 2,91,925 per kilogram. The fall came just a day after silver had touched an all time high of around Rs 4 lakh per kilogram, making the correction both sudden and severe. Market participants described the move as the worst one day fall in silver prices in recent history.
The sharp decline follows an exceptional rally in silver during the previous year, when prices reportedly surged by nearly 170 percent. Strong global demand, tight supply conditions, speculative buying, and a weaker US dollar had pushed silver to record levels. However, the rapid rise also increased vulnerability to profit booking and market corrections.
Analysts attributed the sharp fall to a combination of global and domestic factors. Volatility in international commodity markets, fluctuations in currency exchange rates, and margin pressures led to aggressive selling. Speculative positions built over recent months were unwound quickly as prices began to fall, intensifying the downward momentum.
Domestic silver prices across major Indian cities reflected the decline. Rates fell sharply in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, impacting jewellers, investors, and industrial users. The sudden price correction has raised concerns among retail investors who entered the market during the recent rally.
Experts believe that while the fall appears steep, such corrections are not unusual after extended rallies. Silver remains sensitive to global economic indicators, interest rate expectations, and industrial demand, especially from sectors such as electronics and renewable energy. Any shift in global monetary policy or economic outlook can significantly influence prices.
Market participants are now closely watching international cues, including movements in the US dollar, global inflation data, and central bank signals, for further direction. Domestically, investor sentiment and commodity market regulations are also expected to play a role in determining near term price trends.
Despite the sharp fall, analysts maintain that silver’s long term outlook will depend on sustained industrial demand and broader economic conditions. However, they caution investors to remain aware of volatility and avoid speculative exposure during periods of extreme price movement.
The recent plunge serves as a reminder of the risks associated with commodity investments, especially after prolonged rallies. Investors are advised to closely monitor market developments and consult financial experts before making trading decisions.
