Silver Prices Hit Record High in India and Global Markets; Gold Sees Modest Gains

Market participants attributed the rally to a combination of factors, including robust industrial demand, expectations of easing monetary conditions, and sustained investor interest in precious metals.

Silver prices touched fresh all-time highs on Wednesday, clearly outperforming gold and drawing strong attention from investors. On the Multi Commodity Exchange, silver March futures opened sharply higher and rose more than 2 percent during early trade to reach Rs 2,81,649 per kilogram, marking a new lifetime high in the domestic market.

The surge was driven by strong global cues, with international silver prices crossing the $90 per ounce level. Market participants attributed the rally to a combination of factors, including robust industrial demand, expectations of easing monetary conditions, and sustained investor interest in precious metals.

Silver prices jumped significantly at the opening bell, gaining Rs 6,462 per kilogram on the MCX. The sharp move highlighted growing optimism around the metal’s dual role as both a precious and industrial commodity. Analysts noted that silver often benefits more than gold during periods of strong industrial activity, particularly due to its extensive use in electronics, renewable energy, and electric vehicle manufacturing.

In contrast, gold prices recorded relatively modest gains. On the MCX, gold February futures were trading at Rs 1,42,760 per 10 grams, up Rs 519 or 0.36 percent in early trade. While gold remained close to its record highs, it did not match the pace of silver’s rally.

Global market trends played a significant role in supporting silver prices. Expectations of lower interest rates in major economies, combined with a softer US dollar, made precious metals more attractive to investors. Additionally, supply constraints in certain regions have added to bullish sentiment around silver.

Market experts pointed out that silver’s strong performance could continue in the near term if global economic conditions remain supportive. However, they also cautioned that higher volatility is common at elevated price levels, and investors should remain mindful of sudden price swings.

Gold, meanwhile, continued to act as a safe-haven asset, benefiting from geopolitical uncertainties and economic concerns. Although its gains were limited compared to silver, analysts believe gold remains well-supported at current levels.

The divergence in performance between silver and gold underscores shifting investor preferences within the precious metals segment. While gold traditionally dominates during times of uncertainty, silver tends to outperform when industrial demand and economic recovery expectations are strong.

As markets digest global economic data and central bank signals, precious metal prices are expected to remain in focus. Investors will be closely watching inflation trends, interest rate outlooks, and currency movements to gauge the next direction for both silver and gold.
