Tata Steel has approved a major change in the ownership structure of Jamshedpur FC by agreeing to transfer its entire 100 percent stake in Jamshedpur Football and Sporting Private Limited to Churchill Brothers Sports Club Private Limited for a nominal consideration of Rs 100.
Jamshedpur Football and Sporting Private Limited is the wholly owned subsidiary through which Tata Steel operates Jamshedpur FC, the Indian Super League club based in Jamshedpur. The transaction represents Tata Steel’s exit from direct ownership of the professional football club.
According to the company’s filing, Tata Steel’s Committee of Directors approved the transfer of its entire holding in JFSPL on August 14, 2026. The stake consists of 4.08 crore equity shares, each having a face value of Rs 10. Tata Steel and Churchill Brothers have also entered into a share purchase agreement covering the proposed transaction.
Despite the nominal transaction value of Rs 100, the deal represents a substantial transfer of the football club’s ownership and related sporting interests. Reports indicate that the transaction includes Jamshedpur FC’s Indian Super League sporting licence along with player and coaching contracts, subject to the necessary approvals.
The transaction is subject to approval from the All India Football Federation and other conditions agreed between the two parties. Tata Steel expects the transfer to be completed after the required approvals and formalities are completed.
Jamshedpur FC was established in 2017 after Tata Steel successfully secured an Indian Super League franchise. Since then, the club has become an established name in Indian football and has played its home matches at the JRD Tata Sports Complex in Jamshedpur.
Tata Steel’s association with football in Jamshedpur goes back much further than the formation of Jamshedpur FC. The Tata Football Academy was established in the city in 1987 and has played an important role in developing young footballers. According to reports, the academy has trained more than 300 cadets, with around 150 subsequently representing India.
The company’s decision to transfer ownership of the professional club does not necessarily mean that Tata Steel is leaving football development altogether. Reports indicate that the company intends to continue focusing on grassroots football and its long-standing sporting development programmes.
For Churchill Brothers, the proposed acquisition represents a major development in its football operations. The Goa-based club has a long history in Indian football and has previously competed at the national level. Taking control of an ISL club provides the organisation with a new opportunity to expand its presence in India's top-tier professional football structure.
The transfer also comes at an important stage for Indian football, with the ISL continuing to evolve as a major professional competition. Changes in club ownership can influence sporting strategies, financial planning, player recruitment and long-term development programmes.
Jamshedpur FC has built a strong identity around its association with Tata Steel and the city of Jamshedpur. The club's supporters have closely followed its journey since its entry into the ISL. The change in ownership is therefore likely to be closely watched by fans as Churchill Brothers prepares to take responsibility for the club.
The Rs 100 consideration should not be interpreted as the market value of the football club or its underlying sporting assets. Rather, it is the nominal consideration agreed for the transfer of Tata Steel’s entire shareholding in JFSPL. The transaction also involves the transfer of the associated sporting interests and contractual arrangements, subject to approvals.
JFSPL reportedly recorded a turnover of Rs 32.23 crore in the financial year 2025 to 2026. This provides an indication that the company being transferred has an ongoing commercial operation despite the nominal value attached to the share transfer.
The ownership transition will now depend on regulatory and football authority approvals. Once the necessary conditions are fulfilled, Churchill Brothers will take over the responsibilities associated with Jamshedpur FC.
For Tata Steel, the transaction marks a strategic change in its involvement with professional football. For Churchill Brothers, it represents an opportunity to enter a new phase of Indian football through control of an established ISL club.
The coming weeks are expected to provide greater clarity on the formal completion of the transaction, the club’s management structure and its sporting plans under the new ownership.
