By providing infrastructure and retail opportunities like ‘The Kunj,’ the government hopes to strengthen the rural economy while ensuring artisans receive fair recognition for their skills.

Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh has inaugurated a new handicrafts retail hub in Delhi, named ‘The Kunj,’ as part of efforts to promote India’s traditional crafts and artisan communities. The retail hub is designed to serve as a platform where artisans from different states can directly showcase and sell their products to consumers, eliminating middlemen and ensuring fair returns for their work.

Speaking at the inauguration, Minister Singh highlighted the importance of handicrafts in India’s cultural and economic landscape. He noted that handicrafts are not merely products but reflect centuries of tradition, skill, and creativity passed down through generations. The minister emphasized that India’s artisans have been global ambassadors of the country’s cultural identity, and initiatives such as ‘The Kunj’ will play a key role in sustaining their livelihood and preserving heritage.

‘The Kunj’ has been envisaged as a model project that could be expanded to other cities across India. By providing dedicated spaces for artisans to sell their crafts, the government aims to create direct connections between producers and buyers. This move is expected to increase the visibility of traditional crafts, expand their markets, and bring greater financial stability to artisan families who often face economic challenges.

The retail hub will feature a wide variety of handmade products, including textiles, pottery, wooden carvings, metalwork, and jewelry. Officials noted that ‘The Kunj’ is not just a marketplace but also a cultural hub that will help promote awareness about the craftsmanship and history behind each product. Plans are underway to organize workshops, live demonstrations, and cultural events to engage visitors and educate them about the artistry involved.

Minister Singh also pointed out that handicrafts contribute significantly to India’s exports and employment generation, particularly in rural areas. By providing infrastructure and retail opportunities like ‘The Kunj,’ the government hopes to strengthen the rural economy while ensuring artisans receive fair recognition for their skills.

The initiative aligns with the government’s larger goal of boosting local industries under the ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign. Officials stressed that platforms like ‘The Kunj’ will not only help artisans access domestic markets but also prepare them for global exposure, thereby increasing export potential.

Artisan representatives who attended the inauguration expressed optimism about the initiative, noting that such hubs offer much-needed visibility for their work. Many artisans rely on seasonal exhibitions or fairs to sell their products, but with permanent hubs like this, they will have year-round opportunities to reach buyers.

The government also plans to use digital integration as part of ‘The Kunj,’ enabling artisans to connect with e-commerce platforms and expand their reach beyond physical retail. This is expected to further empower craftsmen and provide consumers with easier access to authentic handmade products.

The inauguration of ‘The Kunj’ in Delhi marks a significant step in promoting handicrafts as both an economic driver and a cultural treasure. With plans to replicate the model nationwide, the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to supporting artisans, preserving traditions, and building sustainable livelihoods rooted in India’s cultural heritage.
