According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India is working with the current US administration to address a range of issues including tariff barriers, market access for Indian products, digital trade, investment flows, and visa regulations for skilled professionals.

India is continuing its efforts to strengthen trade ties with the United States, even as former US President Donald Trump declared there will be no extension of the current tariff pause if he returns to office. Trump's statement has introduced fresh uncertainty into global trade policy, especially for countries like India that are negotiating long-term economic agreements with the United States.

At a recent public event, Trump emphasized that his administration, if re-elected, would take a tougher stance on global trade to protect American industries. He indicated that tariff relaxations currently in place could be reversed, affecting several US trade partners. “We cannot keep giving away advantages to foreign countries,” he said, underlining his preference for using tariffs as a tool for economic leverage.

Despite this position, Indian officials remain focused on advancing trade talks. According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India is working with the current US administration to address a range of issues including tariff barriers, market access for Indian products, digital trade, investment flows, and visa regulations for skilled professionals. These discussions are part of a broader agenda to strengthen bilateral economic cooperation under the India–US Trade Policy Forum and other strategic platforms.

India is also looking to secure fair and predictable access for sectors such as pharmaceuticals, agriculture, textiles, and IT services. At the same time, the US has expressed interest in collaborating on digital infrastructure, supply chain diversification, and clean energy technologies. Trade between the two countries reached record levels in 2024, and officials from both sides have expressed a desire to build on this momentum.

Experts believe that while Trump's comments may indicate a potential policy shift in 2025, India’s diversified trade strategy and continued engagement with the current US administration provide a buffer against sudden changes. The Indian government is also enhancing partnerships with other global economies and promoting domestic manufacturing through initiatives such as Make in India and the Production-Linked Incentive scheme.

Senior Indian trade negotiators have stated that India’s approach is based on long-term strategic planning rather than short-term political developments abroad. “Our priority is to build strong, mutually beneficial relationships based on transparency and mutual respect. We will continue our discussions with the United States and all major partners to ensure trade stability,” said an official familiar with the talks.

As geopolitical and economic uncertainties persist, India is positioning itself as a stable and growing economy capable of weathering global shifts. With upcoming elections in the United States and possible changes in leadership, India is carefully navigating its trade policy to minimize disruptions while pursuing broader economic goals.

In the coming months, attention will be on how India manages its trade relationships amid changing global dynamics, especially with its largest trading partners. For now, Indian trade policy remains focused, strategic, and forward-looking.
