The latest purchase builds on Air India’s landmark aircraft order placed in 2023, when the airline announced the acquisition of 220 Boeing aircraft as part of one of the largest aviation deals in Indian history.

Air India has announced a fresh order for 30 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, marking another significant step in its large scale fleet expansion and modernisation strategy. The latest order consists of 20 Boeing 737-8 aircraft and 10 Boeing 737-10 jets, taking the airline’s total aircraft orders with Boeing to 250. The move reflects Air India’s long term plan to upgrade its fleet, improve fuel efficiency, and strengthen its domestic and international operations.

Reacting to the announcement, United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor congratulated both Air India and Boeing on the deal. In a post shared on social media platform X, the ambassador said the US Embassy works consistently to support partnerships that benefit both India and the United States. He welcomed the growing cooperation in the aviation sector, describing the order as a positive development in bilateral economic ties.

The latest purchase builds on Air India’s landmark aircraft order placed in 2023, when the airline announced the acquisition of 220 Boeing aircraft as part of one of the largest aviation deals in Indian history. So far, Air India has taken delivery of 52 aircraft from that order. This includes 51 Boeing 737-8 jets, which are currently being operated by Air India Express, the group’s low cost subsidiary, and one Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.

The Boeing 787-9 aircraft is expected to begin commercial operations on the Mumbai to Frankfurt route from February 1. The induction of wide body and narrow body aircraft is part of Air India’s broader strategy to expand its international footprint while improving connectivity on key domestic routes.

Air India’s renewed focus on fleet modernisation comes as the airline works to reposition itself as a competitive global carrier following its return to the Tata Group. The addition of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft is expected to enhance operational efficiency due to their improved fuel economy and extended range, allowing the airline to serve high demand routes more effectively.

The Boeing 737-10, the largest variant in the 737 MAX family, offers higher seating capacity, making it suitable for dense short to medium haul routes. Meanwhile, the 737-8 provides flexibility for both domestic and regional international services. Together, these aircraft are expected to play a key role in Air India’s network expansion plans.

The growing partnership between Air India and Boeing also highlights the strengthening aviation and trade relationship between India and the United States. As air travel demand continues to recover and grow, such investments are seen as crucial for meeting passenger expectations and supporting economic growth.

With multiple aircraft deliveries scheduled over the coming years, Air India’s aggressive fleet renewal programme signals its ambition to become a leading global airline while improving service quality, reliability, and sustainability.
