Experts believe that while certain industries may face cost pressures in the short term, the overall macroeconomic trajectory of India remains positive , driven by infrastructure investments, digital growth, and rising domestic consumption.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday responded to concerns regarding the potential impact of newly announced tariffs by the United States, stating that the move is expected to have a negligible effect on India’s overall economic performance. The party emphasized that India’s economic fundamentals remain robust and that the country’s growing trade partnerships will help mitigate any temporary disruptions caused by international trade policy shifts.

Speaking to reporters, BJP spokespersons said that India's exports are well-diversified, and sectors potentially affected by the new US tariffs constitute a relatively small portion of India’s overall trade with the United States. The tariffs, reportedly focused on select steel and aluminum products, are part of broader global trade adjustments and not targeted solely at India.

"India’s economy is built on strong domestic demand and a resilient manufacturing base. The impact of these US tariffs is expected to be very limited," a BJP spokesperson said during a press briefing.

Economists within the party argue that India’s free trade agreements (FTAs) with other regions, including Southeast Asia and Europe, along with ongoing negotiations with the UK and Canada, provide alternative export channels for industries that may be affected by the new tariffs.

Furthermore, the Indian government is closely monitoring global developments and has not ruled out diplomatic engagement with US counterparts to address concerns through official trade dialogue. The Ministry of Commerce is also in touch with export bodies to ensure that necessary support is extended to impacted sectors, if any.

BJP leaders also pointed out that the Indian economy has shown remarkable resilience in the face of global challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, oil price fluctuations, and geopolitical instability. The IMF and World Bank projections for India's GDP growth continue to remain optimistic, reinforcing confidence in the country’s economic outlook.

As the global trade environment continues to evolve, India’s focus remains on strengthening its export competitiveness, deepening regional cooperation, and ensuring policy measures that safeguard long-term economic stability.
