On January 21, 2025, Indian stock markets opened positively but soon reversed the trend, falling into an extreme bearish phase. The Sensex initially surged but ended up losing over 443 points, while the Nifty 50 plunged nearly 113 points. The markets saw significant volatility following US President Donald Trump's inaugural speech, where he did not announce any major tariff policies, as many traders had expected. Both Sensex and Nifty erased the 77,200 and 23,400 marks respectively, recording nearly a 1% drop in value.
At the time of writing, Sensex was trading at 76,258.63, reflecting a decline of 814.81 points or 1.06%. The index hit an intraday low of 76,224.79, reflecting the market's growing concerns. Some stocks like Ultratech Cement, HCL Tech, and ITC saw marginal gains of up to 1%, but the overall market sentiment remained negative. On the other hand, stocks such as Zomato, Adani Ports, Reliance, NTPC, SBI, and ICICI Bank recorded significant declines, with losses ranging from 1% to 10%.
The broader market also showed a negative trend, with a sharp fall in the market capitalization of BSE-listed companies, which dropped by over Rs 3.66 lakh crore to Rs 427.93 lakh crore. Out of the 3,691 stocks traded on the BSE, 1,998 stocks declined, while only 1,512 advanced, and 181 remained unchanged. The BSE Bankex and BSE Sensex Next 50 also experienced substantial losses, tumbling by 445 points and 698 points, respectively, highlighting the pressure across sectors.
