Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd has revised its trading hours for non agricultural commodities, with the new schedule set to take effect from March 9, 2026. Under the updated timings, trading in select commodities will continue until 11:30 PM, extending the late evening session for market participants.
The adjustment has been made in response to changes in United States Daylight Saving Time. Global commodity markets, particularly those dealing in bullion and energy products, are closely linked to US trading hours. When the US shifts its clocks for daylight saving, the time difference between Indian and American markets changes. As a result, Indian exchanges such as MCX adjust their schedules to maintain alignment with international price movements.
The revised trading hours primarily apply to non agricultural commodities, including widely traded products such as gold, silver and crude oil. These commodities are heavily influenced by global demand and supply dynamics, geopolitical developments and international economic indicators. Extended trading hours allow Indian traders to respond more effectively to real time developments in overseas markets.
According to the circular issued by MCX, the change aims to facilitate better price discovery and improve liquidity during periods of high volatility. By extending trading until 11:30 PM, the exchange provides additional time for participants to hedge positions, manage risks and capitalise on international market trends.
Commodity traders, brokers and investors are advised to review the updated schedule carefully. Late night trading requires attention to margin requirements, risk management practices and operational readiness. Brokerage firms may also update their internal systems and support services to accommodate the extended session.
The linkage between Indian and global commodity markets has grown significantly over the years. Prices of gold and silver, for instance, are influenced by movements in major international exchanges and shifts in the US dollar. Similarly, crude oil prices react to developments in global supply chains, production decisions by oil producing nations and economic data from major economies. Aligning trading hours helps Indian participants remain competitive and responsive in this interconnected environment.
Market experts note that adjustments related to daylight saving time are a routine occurrence in global financial markets. Exchanges regularly communicate such changes in advance to ensure smooth transitions. Traders are encouraged to stay informed through official notifications and circulars issued by the exchange.
For investors engaged in commodity trading, understanding timing changes is crucial for effective strategy planning. Extended hours may offer new opportunities but also require disciplined monitoring of market movements.
The revised MCX schedule from March 9, 2026, reflects the exchange’s effort to synchronise with international benchmarks while supporting domestic market efficiency.
