The much-awaited initial public offering of the National Stock Exchange of India is approaching its public launch, with recent grey market activity indicating a potentially positive debut for the exchange. The NSE IPO is scheduled to open for public subscription on September 17, 2026, and the issue has already attracted significant attention from investors and market participants.

Recent grey market indications suggest that the NSE IPO could list at a premium of around 11 to 12 percent over the upper end of its issue price. Some market trackers have reported a grey market premium of around Rs 195 to Rs 208 per share, although these figures can change quickly depending on market sentiment and demand. The grey market is an unofficial and largely unregulated segment, so its pricing should not be treated as a reliable prediction of the actual stock market listing.

The NSE has fixed the IPO price band at Rs 1,700 to Rs 1,785 per equity share. At the upper end of the price band, the issue is expected to raise approximately Rs 22,561.5 crore. The IPO is entirely an offer for sale, meaning the shares being offered are being sold by existing shareholders. NSE itself will not receive the proceeds from the sale after issue-related expenses.

The public issue is expected to become one of India's largest IPOs. The offering consists of up to 12.64 crore equity shares being sold by existing shareholders. The issue size was reduced from the larger offer originally proposed in the draft documents. The revised structure has helped establish a more clearly defined price range ahead of the public subscription period.

For retail investors, the minimum lot size has been set at eight shares. At the upper price band of Rs 1,785, a retail investor would need Rs 14,280 to apply for one lot. The issue has reserved 50 percent of the net offer for qualified institutional buyers, 35 percent for retail investors and 15 percent for non-institutional investors.

The NSE IPO is particularly significant because the exchange has been preparing for a public listing for several years. Regulatory and procedural developments had delayed the listing process, making the current issue an important event for India's capital markets. The Securities and Exchange Board of India approved the draft red herring prospectus earlier in September, clearing a major regulatory step for the offering.

Investor interest has also been supported by NSE's position in India's financial market infrastructure. The exchange operates the NIFTY 50 index and has a major presence in equity, equity derivatives and currency derivatives trading. Its large investor and trading ecosystem has made the IPO one of the most closely watched primary market events of 2026.

At the same time, investors are being advised not to rely solely on the grey market premium while evaluating the issue. The GMP is not an official NSE figure and is not determined by the stock exchanges. It can move sharply before listing because of changes in demand, market sentiment, broader equity market conditions and expectations surrounding the IPO.

The valuation is another factor investors may consider. At the upper price band, NSE is expected to command a valuation of about Rs 4.42 lakh crore. Analysts have highlighted the exchange's strong market position and business scale, while also pointing to valuation considerations and the changing regulatory environment for derivatives trading.

The IPO is also arriving at a time when investors are closely monitoring the performance of newly listed companies. A strong grey market indication can create expectations of a premium listing, but the actual debut can differ significantly from unofficial market estimates. Therefore, a projected 11 to 12 percent gain should be viewed only as an indication of current sentiment rather than a guaranteed return.

The NSE issue is scheduled to close on September 21, with allotment expected on September 22 and listing expected on September 24, according to the published IPO schedule. The final listing price will depend on actual market demand and trading conditions when NSE shares begin trading.

The upcoming NSE IPO is therefore attracting attention for both its size and the importance of the exchange to India's financial system. The current grey market premium suggests that investors are expecting a positive response, but the final outcome will only become clear after the subscription process, allotment and stock market listing.

For prospective investors, the NSE IPO should be assessed on its business performance, valuation, market position, regulatory environment and long-term prospects rather than on GMP alone. Grey market estimates can provide a snapshot of sentiment before listing, but they cannot guarantee either a premium debut or sustained gains after listing.

Some market trackers have reported a grey market premium of around Rs 195 to Rs 208 per share, although these figures can change quickly depending on market sentiment and demand.
