Mumbai – Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), India’s most valuable company by market capitalization, has seen its stock tumble sharply over the last six trading sessions, hitting a 52-week low and shedding approximately ₹2.26 lakh crore in market capitalization. The steep decline has raised eyebrows across market circles and impacted the overall sentiment on the benchmark indices.

RIL shares dropped by over 9% in the past week, reaching levels last seen a year ago. On Monday, the stock continued its downward trend, touching an intraday low of ₹2,525 before closing marginally higher. The company’s market cap now stands significantly reduced from its earlier peak of over ₹19 lakh crore.

Market analysts attribute the slide to a mix of profit-booking, muted quarterly expectations, and sector-wide correction in heavyweight stocks. Some investors are reportedly shifting focus toward mid-cap and small-cap stocks amid volatility in blue-chip counters. RIL’s underperformance has also pulled down the Sensex and Nifty, where it holds significant weight.

“While there’s no company-specific trigger, the stock’s high valuation and lack of recent growth momentum have led to increased selling pressure,” said a senior market analyst. Others believe the recent softness in the energy segment and lower refining margins may have weighed on sentiment.

RIL’s telecom and retail arms—Jio and Reliance Retail—remain crucial to its long-term prospects. However, delays in potential IPOs and subdued updates in recent earnings calls have dampened near-term optimism among investors.

Despite the decline, brokerage views on the stock remain divided. While some maintain a “Buy” rating, citing long-term fundamentals, others have revised short-term targets downward due to the ongoing correction phase.

Retail investors are advised to remain cautious and monitor global market cues, crude oil trends, and corporate developments before taking any position in the stock.

The coming days will be critical for RIL as investors await signals on its recovery path and broader market stability.

“While there’s no company-specific trigger, the stock’s high valuation and lack of recent growth momentum have led to increased selling pressure,” said a senior market analyst.
