The Indian stock market began the January 21st trading session on a positive note, with the Sensex surging by 225 points to reach an intraday high of 77,297.72. The Nifty 50 also gained 82 points, crossing the 23,400 mark and hitting an intraday high of 23,426.30. However, this initial optimism quickly faded, and both indices experienced volatility shortly after the opening bell. The Sensex dropped to an intraday low of 76,941.67, while the Nifty touched a low of 23,354.90. Bank Nifty also traded lower, losing 120 points.
Sector-wise, media, IT, metals, and pharma stocks were among the top gainers, while banking, financial, consumer durables, and realty stocks saw declines. In early trade on January 21, Asian shares traded higher, following US President Donald Trump’s inaugural speech, which did not mention massive tariffs on key countries. Despite this positive sentiment, US stock futures, which had closed higher during Trump's inauguration, were facing a cautious tone on January 21, as Wall Street opened after a three-day holiday, marking its first reaction to the new administration's policies.
