Indian benchmark equity indices experienced mixed trading on January 21, 2025. The BSE Sensex gained 76 points to reach 77,149, while the Nifty 50 saw a drop of 48 points to settle at 23,393 by 12 PM. The market saw a volatile opening with Zomato losing 8.01%, while UltraTech Cement, Titan, and ITC led the gains, each rising over 2%. Other notable gainers included Apollo Hospitals and Wipro.
In contrast, sectors like Consumer Durables, Realty, and PSU Banks were under pressure, with the Nifty Consumer Durables index falling 1.23%. On the other hand, the Healthcare index saw significant gains, climbing 1.17%.
The Indian market was influenced by global cues, especially the inauguration of US President Donald Trump and his cautious stance on tariffs. Trump's speech touched upon trade deficits but lacked concrete tariff measures, providing some relief to markets concerned about inflationary risks.
In the broader markets, the Nifty Smallcap 100 saw a rise of 0.28%, while the Nifty Midcap 100 remained flat. Sectoral indices displayed a mixed trend, with financial and metal sectors advancing, while sectors like IT and FMCG showed modest declines. The day was marked by mixed performances across Asian markets, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 and South Korea's Kospi declining, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 saw a modest rise.
In the primary market, several IPOs including Stallion India Fluorochemicals Limited and EMA Partners India Limited were active, and in global markets, US oil prices dipped after Trump's announcement to expand US oil and gas production.
Investors remain cautious, awaiting further clarity on Trump's economic policies and their potential impact on trade and inflation.
