The early losses highlighted sustained selling pressure despite a relatively measured opening, as traders remained reluctant to take fresh positions amid uncertain global conditions.

Indian equity benchmark indices opened Wednesday’s session on a subdued note, extending the negative momentum seen in the previous trading day. Weak global cues, especially a sharp overnight selloff in US equities, coupled with renewed trade-war worries, continued to weigh on market sentiment. Investors remained cautious, focusing on global developments and key technical levels for domestic indices.

At around 10:48 am IST, the BSE Sensex was trading 718.82 points lower at 81,461.65, marking a decline of nearly one percent. The NSE Nifty50 also slipped sharply, falling 219.20 points to trade near 25,013.30. The early losses highlighted sustained selling pressure despite a relatively measured opening, as traders remained reluctant to take fresh positions amid uncertain global conditions.

Market breadth stayed negative throughout the session, with a majority of stocks trading in the red. This indicated broad-based weakness across sectors rather than isolated profit booking. Heavyweight stocks in banking, information technology and metals contributed to the decline, tracking losses in their global peers. IT stocks faced pressure following weakness in US technology shares, while metal stocks declined amid concerns over global demand and trade disruptions.

Global factors played a major role in dampening investor confidence. US stock markets ended sharply lower overnight after renewed concerns over trade restrictions and slowing global growth. Rising geopolitical tensions and uncertainty surrounding international trade policies have increased volatility across global financial markets, prompting investors to shift towards safer assets. Asian markets also traded mixed to weak, offering little support to domestic equities.

Back home, attention turned to technical indicators, particularly the Nifty’s movement near its 200-day moving average. Analysts view this level as a critical long-term support, and a sustained break below it could trigger further selling pressure. However, some market experts believe selective buying could emerge if the index manages to hold above this key level, supported by domestic fundamentals.

Despite the sharp fall, analysts pointed out that India’s macroeconomic outlook remains relatively stable compared to many global peers. Strong domestic consumption, steady government spending and controlled inflation continue to support the long-term growth narrative. However, in the near term, global uncertainties are expected to keep volatility elevated.

Investors are also closely watching upcoming global economic data and policy signals from major central banks, which could influence market direction. Any clarity on trade negotiations or easing of geopolitical tensions may help stabilise markets in the coming sessions.

For now, market participants are advised to remain cautious and focus on fundamentally strong stocks while avoiding aggressive positions. With global cues likely to dominate sentiment, Indian markets may continue to witness short-term fluctuations until broader clarity emerges on international developments.
