Mumbai – Indian stock markets are showing signs of stress as global cues remain negative, raising concerns about whether the Nifty 50 index could slip into bear market territory following the Nasdaq’s lead. The Nasdaq Composite has already entered a bear market after falling more than 20% from its recent peak, triggering fears of a broader market contagion.

Back home, the Nifty 50 and Sensex have seen sharp corrections over the past week, with investors pulling out amid fears of a global slowdown, interest rate hikes, and geopolitical tensions. While the Nifty hasn’t yet breached the official bear market threshold—defined as a 20% drop from its most recent high—it is inching dangerously close.

The Indian market's vulnerability has increased due to heavy foreign institutional investor (FII) outflows, underperformance in IT and tech stocks, and weakness in global equities. Traders are also reacting to hawkish commentary from the U.S. Federal Reserve, which is expected to raise interest rates aggressively to combat inflation.

“India is not insulated from global market volatility,” said a senior equity strategist. “If Nasdaq’s decline continues, Indian indices may face more downside pressure, especially in sectors exposed to global demand cycles like IT and pharma.”

Domestic cues, including mixed corporate earnings, inflation concerns, and a lack of major positive triggers, have further dampened sentiment. Experts advise caution in the short term and recommend a selective, long-term approach to investing, especially in fundamentally strong sectors like banking, FMCG, and infrastructure.

Some analysts remain hopeful that India’s strong macroeconomic fundamentals and robust retail participation could offer support at lower levels. However, they caution that volatility will remain high as global markets remain jittery.

With investors awaiting further clarity on global interest rate movements and economic data from the U.S. and Europe, the coming days will be crucial in determining whether the Nifty can stabilize—or if it will mirror Nasdaq’s slide into bear market territory.

However, they caution that volatility will remain high as global markets remain jittery.
