In 2024, Indian students continued to favor the United States as a premier destination for higher education, with a significant focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines. According to the Open Doors Report, 42.9% of Indian students enrolled in U.S. institutions chose Mathematics and Computer Science as their primary fields of study. This preference highlights the increasing demand for expertise in technology and data-driven sectors.
Engineering remained a popular choice, attracting 24.5% of Indian students. However, this represents a decline from previous years, where enrollment figures were 26.9% in 2022-23 and 29.6% in 2021-22. The decrease suggests a shift towards other emerging fields, possibly due to evolving job market trends and the dynamic nature of global industries.
Beyond STEM, Indian students also showed interest in Business and Management programs, as well as Physical and Life Sciences. These areas offer diverse career opportunities and are integral to various sectors, including healthcare, research, and corporate leadership.
The overall number of Indian students in the U.S. reached 331,000 in the 2023-24 academic year, accounting for 29.4% of the total international student population. This marks the first time since 2009 that India has surpassed China as the largest source of international students in the U.S.
The sustained interest in U.S. education among Indian students can be attributed to the quality of academic programs, research opportunities, and the potential for career advancement. As global industries continue to evolve, the emphasis on STEM education among Indian students reflects a strategic approach to securing roles in high-demand sectors.
In conclusion, the academic pursuits of Indian students in the U.S. during 2024 underscore a strong inclination towards STEM fields, particularly Mathematics and Computer Science. This trend aligns with global economic shifts and the growing importance of technology and innovation in various industries.
