NEET UG 2026 MBBS Seat Matrix Updated
The National Medical Commission has revised the MBBS seat matrix for the 2026 to 2027 academic year, bringing an increase of 13,636 approved MBBS seats across medical colleges in India. With this latest revision, the total number of approved MBBS seats has reached 1,40,664 across 839 medical colleges, excluding seats in Institutes of National Importance.
The revised seat matrix was issued by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board of the National Medical Commission. The latest notice was published on September 22, 2026, with the seat matrix updated as of September 18. The revised figures are relevant to the NEET UG 2026 counselling and admission process because they represent the latest approved intake capacity of medical colleges for the 2026 to 2027 academic session.
NMC Adds 13,636 MBBS Seats
According to the revised matrix, 1,27,028 MBBS seats are renewed seats, while 13,636 seats have been added through increases in approved intake capacity and permissions for new medical colleges.
The overall 1,40,664 seats are spread across 447 government medical colleges and 392 private medical colleges. Government medical colleges account for 64,121 seats, while private medical colleges account for 76,543 seats.
The updated figures also include 3,850 MBBS seats from 41 newly established medical colleges. Of these institutions, 13 are government medical colleges with a combined 850 seats, while 28 are private medical colleges with a total of 3,000 seats.
State Wise Increase in MBBS Seats
Several states have received substantial increases in their approved MBBS intake for the 2026 to 2027 academic year.
Karnataka recorded the largest increase, with 1,650 additional MBBS seats. Tamil Nadu followed with an increase of 1,250 seats. Uttar Pradesh received 1,200 additional seats, while Rajasthan and Telangana recorded increases of 1,100 and 1,060 seats respectively.

Tamil Nadu MBBS Seat Update
Tamil Nadu has received an additional 1,250 MBBS seats in the revised matrix. The state now has 14,299 approved MBBS seats across 78 medical colleges, according to the latest state wise figures.
The state has 37 government medical colleges and 41 private medical colleges included in the updated matrix. Government colleges account for 5,349 total seats, while private colleges account for 8,950 seats. The increase includes 150 additional seats in government colleges and 1,100 additional seats in private institutions.
Karnataka has the highest total approved intake among the states listed in the revised matrix, with 15,745 MBBS seats across 76 medical colleges. Uttar Pradesh has 14,400 seats across 92 colleges, while Maharashtra has 13,399 seats across 89 colleges.
