In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court has ordered the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dhanbad to admit a Dalit youth who lost his admission seat over a fee payment issue. The student, who faced a financial hurdle of just Rs 17,000, was denied entry despite being eligible for admission.
The case reached the Supreme Court after the student appealed against the decision made by IIT Dhanbad, which cited the non-payment of fees as the reason for denying his admission. The court emphasized the need for educational institutions to be more accommodating, particularly when it comes to students from marginalized backgrounds.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court noted the importance of education as a fundamental right and urged institutions to consider the circumstances faced by students, especially those belonging to Scheduled Castes and other disadvantaged groups. The court remarked that denying access to education over a relatively small fee undermines the efforts to promote inclusivity in higher education.
The Supreme Court's ruling is seen as a significant step towards ensuring that Dalit students have equal opportunities for education and are not penalized due to financial constraints. The court has directed IIT Dhanbad to process the student's admission immediately, reiterating the need for institutions to uphold principles of equity and justice.
This decision has been welcomed by various educational activists and organizations advocating for the rights of marginalized communities, who view it as a critical affirmation of the need for fair access to education in India. The case serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by many students from economically weaker sections and the importance of addressing these issues to foster a more inclusive educational environment.
