Tamil Nadu is bracing for heavy to very heavy rainfall this week as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring significant weather disturbances. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Chennai tomorrow, December 11, 2024, as the city is expected to experience heavy rains due to a cyclonic disturbance in the central parts of the South Bay of Bengal. The IMD has warned that the low-pressure area is likely to move west-northwestward and reach the Tamil Nadu coast by December 11.
In addition to Chennai, several districts are on high alert, including Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Cuddalore, where heavy rains are expected to continue until December 13. Puducherry and Karaikal regions are also included in this alert, with significant rainfall predicted over the next couple of days. The weather conditions are expected to worsen over the next 48 hours, causing disruption to daily activities, including the closure of schools and colleges.
IMD's alert for Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu further emphasizes the intensity of the incoming weather. As of December 9, the weather system is forecast to intensify, leading to a continuation of rains across the region through the week.
