The Uttarakhand Cabinet has approved two significant measures covering medical education and sports employment in the state. The Cabinet has decided to increase the monthly stipend for MBBS interns in government medical colleges from Rs 17,000 to Rs 25,000. It has also approved 243 government posts for medal winning sportspersons under the state Sports Policy 2021.
The decisions were taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. State officials said the increase in the MBBS internship honorarium is intended to provide greater financial support to medical interns working in government medical institutions.
The stipend will increase by Rs 8,000 per month, representing an increase of about 47 percent over the previous amount. The revised amount will apply to MBBS interns at five government medical colleges in the state.
The five institutions are located in Srinagar, Haldwani, Dehradun, Haridwar and Almora. These government medical colleges offer MBBS education and also conduct postgraduate medical programmes.
The Cabinet decision comes amid wider discussions across several states about the stipend received by medical interns. Medical interns undertake clinical training as part of their medical education and work in hospital settings under the supervision of qualified doctors. In Uttarakhand, MBBS interns had been receiving Rs 17,000 per month before the latest Cabinet decision. The increase to Rs 25,000 will provide an additional Rs 8,000 each month to eligible interns.
The decision also follows recent protests by MBBS interns in Uttarakhand over stipend-related concerns. Nearly 600 interns at government medical colleges had reportedly participated in a protest earlier in September, seeking an increase in their monthly stipend. At that stage, the interns had demanded an increase to Rs 30,000 per month.
The Cabinet's decision to raise the stipend to Rs 25,000 therefore represents a revision of the amount previously paid to interns, although it is lower than the Rs 30,000 figure sought by protesting interns.
The Cabinet also approved a proposal to implement provisions relating to sports employment under the Uttarakhand Sports Policy 2021. Under the policy, sportspersons who win medals at national or international competitions can be considered for out of turn appointments to eligible gazetted and non gazetted government posts.
A total of 243 posts have now been approved for this purpose. The positions will be spread across several government departments, including Sports, Youth Welfare, Home, Transport, Education and Forest.
The sports quota appointments are intended for athletes who have achieved medal winning performances at national or international sporting events. The policy provides a mechanism for recognising sporting achievements through government employment opportunities.
