West Bengal Board Proposes Postponing Class 10 Board Exams to March 2027

Students preparing for the 2027 Madhyamik examinations should continue their studies according to the existing officially announced timetable until the revised schedule receives government approval.

The board has submitted a revised examination schedule to the West Bengal government's School Education Department for consideration. Under the proposal, the examinations would begin on March 2 and continue until March 16, 2027, instead of the previously announced schedule of February 15 to 25.

However, the revised dates have not been officially approved. WBBSE president Laltu Das clarified that the schedule is only a proposal and that no final decision has been taken.

Why has WBBSE proposed postponing the examinations?

The proposed change is primarily linked to the deployment of schoolteachers for Census 2027 duties.

According to reports, the census enumeration exercise is scheduled to begin on January 25, 2027, and continue until February 28. A large number of teachers are expected to participate in the census-related work.

Teachers also play an important role in conducting board examinations, including invigilation and other examination-centre responsibilities. If both activities take place during the same period, the board could face difficulties arranging sufficient staff at examination centres.

To avoid this administrative overlap, WBBSE has proposed moving the Madhyamik examinations to March. The revised schedule is now awaiting consideration by the state School Education Department.

Proposed Madhyamik examination dates for 2027

According to the proposed timetable reported by media outlets, the subject-wise examination dates are as follows:

SubjectProposed date
First LanguageMarch 2, 2027
Second LanguageMarch 3, 2027
HistoryMarch 5, 2027
GeographyMarch 8, 2027
MathematicsMarch 12, 2027
Physical ScienceMarch 13, 2027
Life ScienceMarch 15, 2027
Optional Elective SubjectsMarch 16, 2027

The proposed examination timings are from 10:45 am to 2 pm, with the first 15 minutes reserved for reading the question paper. Answer writing is scheduled to begin at 11 am.

These dates and timings are part of the proposed schedule and should not be treated as final until the board issues an approved notification.

Previously announced examination schedule

WBBSE had earlier scheduled the 2027 Madhyamik examinations from February 15 to February 25.

The previously announced schedule placed the First Language paper on February 15, followed by Second Language on February 16. History was scheduled for February 18, Geography for February 19, Mathematics for February 22, Physical Science for February 23, Life Science for February 24 and Optional Elective Subjects for February 25.

The proposed March schedule would therefore shift the examinations by approximately two weeks.

What should students do now?

Students preparing for the 2027 Madhyamik examinations should continue their studies according to the existing officially announced timetable until the revised schedule receives government approval.

Candidates should regularly check the West Bengal Board's official website for updates and the final examination notification.

The board's decision is expected to clarify the final examination dates. Until then, students and schools should treat March 2 to 16 as proposed dates, not confirmed examination dates.

These dates and timings are part of the proposed schedule and should not be treated as final until the board issues an approved notification.
