Ed Sheeran has publicly addressed the controversy surrounding his Loop Tour after rapper Macklemore was removed from several remaining US performances following his public comments in support of Palestine.
The dispute began after Macklemore made pro Palestinian remarks during his appearances as a supporting act on Sheeran's tour. During a September performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, Macklemore expressed support for Palestinians and used the phrase Free Palestine while discussing the conflict involving Israel and Gaza. He also performed his protest song Hind's Hall.
Following those appearances, several venues reportedly objected to Macklemore continuing as part of the tour lineup. The promoter of the US leg, Messina Touring Group, subsequently confirmed that Macklemore would no longer perform at eight of the remaining US dates. According to Sheeran, some venues had indicated that they would withdraw from hosting the concerts if Macklemore remained on the bill.
Sheeran then issued a statement explaining his position. He said the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the promoter and venues and was not his decision. Sheeran said he had spent the week attempting to communicate with the relevant parties and find a solution that would allow the tour to continue.
The singer also said that he respects Macklemore as an artist and his right to express his views. At the same time, Sheeran explained that he prefers to keep his own concerts away from direct political campaigning or public political positions. He said his shows are intended to bring audiences from different backgrounds together.
The controversy escalated when several other artists connected with the Loop Tour announced that they would no longer participate in upcoming performances. Finneas, Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham and Irish folk band Beoga all withdrew from the remaining tour dates. Their statements expressed solidarity with Macklemore and support for Palestinians.
Finneas, who had been scheduled to appear during Sheeran's South American dates, said artists should not be silenced when speaking about people they believe are being oppressed. Aaron Rowe and Beoga also referred to Ireland's historical experiences while explaining their decision to leave the tour.
Lukas Graham described the decision as difficult while expressing gratitude toward Sheeran. The withdrawals mean that the artists who had been scheduled to support Sheeran for upcoming dates have now stepped away from the tour. Beoga had also been serving as Sheeran's touring band.
Macklemore has separately disputed the circumstances surrounding his removal. He said that pressure from stadium owners and other influential figures contributed to the decision. Robert Kraft, who owns the NFL's New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, confirmed that Macklemore would not perform at the Massachusetts venue. Kraft cited concerns about Macklemore's recent statements as well as what he described as a broader history of rhetoric and imagery that he said had offended members of the Jewish community.
Macklemore has maintained that his statements were intended to support Palestinians and criticize Israeli policies rather than target Jewish people. The disagreement has therefore developed into a broader discussion about political expression by performers, venue policies and the responsibilities of artists using major entertainment platforms.
Sheeran has said that he does not consider himself responsible for the decision to remove Macklemore. He also said that his personal views about the Israel Palestine conflict do not necessarily need to be expressed publicly through his professional platform.
The developments have affected the supporting lineup for Sheeran's Loop Tour, with several artists withdrawing after Macklemore's removal. The North American leg of the tour is scheduled to continue with upcoming performances, although the lineup and supporting arrangements have been affected by the dispute.
The controversy remains centered on competing positions over artistic expression, venue decisions and political speech at live music events.
