The upcoming biopic on legendary Carnatic singer MS Subbulakshmi has attracted attention even before production begins, following the announcement that Rashmika Mandanna will portray the celebrated musician on screen.
Titled M.S – A Legacy On Screen, the film was officially launched on September 16, 2026, coinciding with the 110th birth anniversary of MS Subbulakshmi. The project is directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, while Anirudh Ravichander is composing the music. The film is being produced by Allu Aravind, Rockline Venkatesh and Bunny Vas under their respective production banners.
Rashmika Mandanna’s casting has become one of the main talking points surrounding the project. While the announcement confirmed her as the actor portraying MS Subbulakshmi, some social media users questioned the casting and referred to Vidya Balan’s earlier association with a proposed biopic on the singer.
Addressing the discussion at the film’s launch, producer Allu Aravind defended the casting decision. He described the selection in spiritual terms, saying that MS Subbulakshmi had, in his view, chosen Rashmika for the role.
Aravind said that the filmmakers were not simply making a biopic about the singer but felt that the project had come together as though Subbulakshmi herself had chosen the people involved. He extended the same sentiment to Rashmika’s casting, suggesting that the actor had been selected as part of that journey.
The remark was made during the official launch event and represents the producer’s personal description of the casting process. It should therefore be understood as his perspective rather than as a literal or independently verifiable claim about how the casting decision was made.
Rashmika also spoke emotionally about taking on the role. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity and reflected on the impact of MS Subbulakshmi’s voice. Rashmika further said that she would give her best to the role. Her comments highlighted the responsibility involved in portraying one of India’s most recognised classical singers, particularly because the character is closely associated with music, spirituality and a significant cultural legacy.
The casting discussion has also revived interest in an earlier MS Subbulakshmi biopic project. Reports have previously stated that filmmaker Rajiv Menon had planned a film on the singer in 2013, with Vidya Balan reportedly attached to the lead role. That project was eventually shelved. Vidya’s association with the proposed film later became part of the online discussion after her tribute to MS Subbulakshmi in 2024.
Some social media users subsequently questioned why Vidya Balan was not chosen for the newly announced project. These reactions represent individual opinions expressed online and do not establish any official disagreement between the actors or the filmmakers.
The filmmakers have now formally confirmed Rashmika as the lead actor for M.S – A Legacy On Screen. The project is being presented as a pan-Indian production and is expected to explore the life and musical legacy of MS Subbulakshmi.
Veteran actor Kamal Haasan also attended the launch event and offered words of encouragement to Rashmika. He acknowledged the responsibility associated with portraying an iconic personality and compared the pressure of such a role with the challenge an actor might face while portraying a global figure such as Michael Jackson.
Kamal Haasan also emphasised the importance of capturing MS Subbulakshmi’s compassion and personality rather than focusing only on physical resemblance. He encouraged Rashmika to approach the role with confidence and commitment.
The choice of Rashmika is particularly significant because the role requires the portrayal of a musician whose influence extended well beyond the Carnatic music community. MS Subbulakshmi became one of the most widely recognised Indian classical vocalists and performed at major international venues during her career.
Born in Madurai in 1916, MS Subbulakshmi began learning music at a young age in a musically rich family. Her mother, Madurai Shanmukhavadivu, was a veena player, while her grandmother, Akkammal, played the violin. Her early exposure to music helped establish the foundation for her later career as a celebrated Carnatic vocalist.
Her career eventually took her to international stages, including the Edinburgh International Festival, the United Nations in New York, Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall. Her repertoire included Carnatic compositions as well as devotional and other Indian-language music, helping her reach audiences beyond traditional classical music circles.
The biopic therefore carries considerable expectations because it will attempt to present the life of an artist whose career is closely connected with Indian music and cultural history.
